Arafat could have denounced the bombing today. But of course he did not...
His silence is especially striking since he spoke to 2,000 Muslim in a mosque in Cairo just yesterday. If you can get that kind of an audience on another continent, you can surely release a few sentences in Arabic to your own neighbors...right?

Excuse me, but the suicide bombings started several months ago. They bomb if Powell comes, they bomb if he doesn't. They bomb if they are given concessions, they bomb if they are attacked.
I am not nuts about Powell, but his visit has nothing to do with whether there are suicide bombings or not.
To: linn37
Well, he would have had that chance if he wanted it. Obviously, he does not. Or he would have said SOMETHING.
But I see what you're saying, and you know what? It wouldn't have mattered. That place is a ticking time bomb.
And Iraq has POSTPONED the UN inspections "due to the war in the Middle East..." um-hum. Whose sticky fingers do you see all over your monitor? ;-)

This afternoon I heard Powell saying that the ISRAELI'S should be considering world opinion and the effects of their incursions on the entire region. HOW DARE HE........WOULD HE BE SAYING SUCH A THING IF HIS NEIGHBORHOOD WAS UNDER SEIGE......HIS CHILDREN BLASTED TO KINGDOM COME. What do you think????????????????
To: aBootes
Right. His silence tells the whole story. He doesn't want peace; he never
wanted peace, end of story.
Colin Powell got an eyeful today when that helicopter was ordered to the site. We all got an eyeful.
Enough is enough.
He blew it. Now he has to pay the price.

When did you hear this? Source? Was it before or after the bombing? Do you have to type in all caps? Really. Settle down.

I think he is right. Israel has to consider its neighbors, since it is surrounded by a bunch of countries that would like to wipe it off the face of the earth. I think Israel does consider world opinion, because no nation likes to be seen as the villain, especially when they are not.
There are lots of things to be upset about, but this statement is not one of them.
To: DJ88
I was surfing the channels this afternoon, early, and heard Powell myself.

Maybe not, I heard a clip from a recent press thing with Condi Rice where she was talking about how embargos would hurt the oil producers more than us, that they need our bucks. The quote was something like "Think about it, it's not like they can eat the oil." The room howled in response.

Nothing would please the 'neighbors' more than a few more dead jews. Guess there are people here on FR that would agree!!! Not a bit surprised!!
To: OldFriend
Well, I think the fact that he has cancelled the meeting with Arafat speaks volumes more than that statement.

No doubt the storm of objections to the mere postponing was the final straw.....for today at least. We shall see. Evidently the appeasers are out in full force here on FR too. Pity!

That is AWESOME!!! Venezuela is our 3rd largest provider - maybe Bush should negotiate for that Cuban slack, huh? :)

You know, I really take offense at that comment. I do not like dead Jews, in Israel or anywhere else.
Arafat is going to continue the bombings whether Powell is there or not. That is all that I meant. Powell's visit is to give some legitimacy to the eventual ouster of Arafat.
I would appreciate it if you would realize that people can disagree on the strategy involved here without hating Jews, for goodness sake!
To: Oldeconomybuyer
Thank goodness, I was actually very afraid for Powell's life. I could not believe they would even consider sending him into a strong hold of terrorists and expect him to come out unscratched.
To: JAWs
Speaking of godfathers....
Bush ought to personally go over to meet Arafat himself. I really mean it. He ought to do one of these on Arafat....
"Look here, fellas. This guy comes to me. He asks me for a favor. But he doesn't even show me the sign of respect. Here, Yasir. Why don't you take a ride with my good friends, Luca Brasi and Fat Clemenza."
"Oh, don't mind that piano wire that Condoleezza is carrying. She's a pianist."
Be Seeing You,
Chris

This afternoon I heard Powell saying that the ISRAELI'S should be considering . . . the effects of their incursions on the entire region. . . . WOULD HE BE SAYING SUCH A THING IF HIS NEIGHBORHOOD WAS UNDER SEIGE......Believe me, Powell IS THINKING of his, mine any YOUR neighborhood.
September 11th was successfully spun and deflected away from a Middle East linkage. The next one will be a little more difficult to spin.
