JERUSALEM (AP) -- Secretary of State Colin Powell called off his Saturday meeting with Yasser Arafat shortly after midnight Friday night after a new suicide bombing spread out before Powell's eyes the carnage he had come to Israel in hopes of ending.

The meeting might be rescheduled for Sunday, a senior U.S. official said. But Powell's spokesman said the secretary "expects a clear denunciation of terrorism" and of the new bombing in the meantime.

Arafat has been reluctant to make such a statement, with support for suicide attacks running high among Palestinians in light of Israel's military offensive in the West Bank.

Bravo! Indeed!!!

I'm happy about the meeting being cancelled, but things will only escalate from here, I'm afraid. Maybe that's what needs to happen. Whichever - Pray hard.

Arafat's own group apparently carried out this latest suicide bombing. He just threw away his advantage by driving Powell out. Arafat must go.

Powell scraps Arafat meeting, but may reschedule

JERUSALEM, April 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State
Colin Powell has cancelled his meeting with Palestinian
President Yasser Arafat on Saturday, Powell's spokesman said,
but a U.S. official said the talks might go ahead on Sunday.
Referring to a female suicide bomber who killed six other
people and injured 90 more in a central Jerusalem market, the
spokesman Richard Boucher said: "In light of today's
developments, the secretary will not be meeting with Chairman
Arafat Saturday."
But a senior State Department official told reporters on
condition of anonymity that the meeting could be rescheduled.
"Sunday is a possibility," he said.
Boucher said Powell wanted Arafat to condemn the attack but
did not say it was a condition for the meeting. "The secretary
condemns in the strongest possible terms today's terrorist
attack and expects Chairman Arafat to do so as well," he said.
The State Department spokesman, travelling with Powell on a
crisis Middle East mission, said Powell would meet aid workers
in Jerusalem on Saturday to investigate humanitarian problems in
the West Bank following Israel's incursions into Palestinian
towns.

Although we had to suffer through a week of armchair FR "experts" b!tching about Powell's trip, the U.S. looks much more "reasonable" to the Arab states for having Powell plan on a peace meeting with the terrorists only to have to cancel it "at the last minute" due to yet another bombing homicide.

It always seems that those who understand geopolitics the least complain the most, and end up looking silly after the fact...

No difference.

It was The Dark Side. Or, The Press. Or, the Euro-dorks. For some strange reason, Bush let them play. Or got played.

This would be the right thing; however, I'll wait and see. There's been so many flip-flops of late that flip-flops now have their own inertia.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (L) and Secretary of State Colin Powell pose for photographers at Sharon's Jerusalem residence after talks April 12, 2002. Powell called on Syria and other nations to restrain Lebanese-based Hizbollah guerrillas who have stepped up attacks on Israel's northern border in recent weeks.
