Stopped giving to the United Way a long time ago. Give only to the Boy Scouts and the Salvation Army, and the nuns at my daughters' school.

So...the United Way will go its own way and the rest of us will go ours. It may turn out to be a good thing. If Scouting is worth keeping, and I think it is, we can support it without the UW's fingerprints.
Nothing like a financial crisis to bring clarity of mind.

Ditto that! Best to give directly. I quit UW after the last scandals with the salaries.

I agree, your method will have the most effect, IMO. I donate to Scouts and Salvation Army and a small number of other well chosen organisations directly. Nothing to United Way.

Thirty years ago my mother volunteered for United as office staff (accounting) and she was led to believe that the purpose (of United) was efficency in managing fund rasing and distribution. It seems that it has degenerated into the power to coerce by withholding funds. One wonders if that was the goal from the start: power.
