The Vatican yesterday asked Israel to promise not to kill the Palestinians holed up in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem when they leave. The Vatican has asked that the Palestinians there be allowed to go to Gaza.

Bill Buckley at NRO thinks this campaign is pointless. He may be right, but for the wrong reasons. The headquarters of Palestinian terror is in Damascus and Teheran, not in the camps. The scalpel of the IDF cannot reach deep enough to remove the cancer. The locus of the malignancy remains untouched, and it will metastize elsewhere.

A final Israeli victory is unattainable unless the United States wins the global fight against Islamic fundamentalism. If America wins, Arafat and company will be stragglers to be mopped up.
