Webster's II dictionary says:
diverse adj. [ME divers, diverse < OFr. divers < Lat. diversus < p.part. of divertere, to divert],
could be read as "a more diverted jury", which is a more divided jury and a more divided jury is a more easily distracted jury.
Makes perfect sense.
"Diverted" means "1. To turn aside from a direction or course : DEFLECT. 2. To distract.".....

Actually I just read diverse as "less whites". Which usually means the same thing.
