The Truth for Youth: The Stupidest Comics Ever
4/20/2002

Posted on 04/20/2002 12:51:20 PM PDT by JediGirl

Recently, a batch of comics have come to my attention.  A batch that stands out for a variety of reasons, but particularly because they seek to impose outdated and immoral morals on children.  Now, I'm all for teaching our children well, as David Crosby so eloquently stated in-between his massive drug binges and liver transplants.  But I have a problem with these particular books, and the organization behind them.

You see, instead of teaching tolerance and values that actually contribute positively to our society, a group calling itself "The Truth For Youth" is distributing devoutly intolerant "Christian" comic books across the country, handing it out to however many children they can.  Led by Tim Todd ("The last four letters of the word 'AMERICAN' are 'I-CAN' not 'I-RAN'!"), among the group's typical social welfare literature like anti-drugs and anti-drinking books are such comic books railing against homosexuality, rock music, evolution, and pornography.  Of course, even in the seemingly innocent "School Violence" comic, the group manages to turn it into an anti-Separation of Church & State crusade.  "Hey Timmy, there's nothing on the blackboard that says 'Thou Shall Not Kill.'  That means it's alright!!  Bleed them all!"

For clarification's sake, let me say this is an opinion article, and nothing I say represents Slush or its editorial staff or writers.  And if you count yourself as a member of the American Taliban, this would probably be a good point to stop reading.  However, if you believe that teaching intolerance of people different than you is wrong, then you've come to the right place.  For today, children, we're going to look at the hateful, insidious, damaging, and downright ridiculous comic books distributed by "The Truth For Youth."

I should also quickly thank Sharkey from BadAssMoFo.com for first making us aware of this bunch of crazy stuck-up white people.  So, without further ado, hang on tight, and get ready to laugh and learn.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PORNOGRAPHY: PARENTAL CONTROLS

In this comic, a sex-craved Mexican ex-con with squinty eyes and a bad 1970s disco haircut allows his son Marty to access pornography on the family's computer.  When Marty invites his blonde-hair, blue-eyed friend Jesse over, he thinks it'd be simply awesome to pull up some naked women.  WHOA, MARTY, WHOA!!!  And thus begins Jesse's tirade against the evils of pornography.  Not because it's degrading to women, of course, but because it's sinful.

At this point I'm going to include the first page of the comic, so you can get a feel of what I'm talking about, and then I'll continue.

"Please go back to that soccer site we were viewing!"  I like how Marty has the earring with the shaved sides.  Very current.  I guess the artist was watching old Mexican snuff films for inspiration or something.  There's not much I can say about this comic on the pornography front.  While I disagree with their pornography is sinful stance, I'm not going to say they can't propagate that.  However, this comic has the underlying tone of racism, and that rubbed me the wrong way (no pun intended).  The second page consists of Marty's father, looking like he just walked off a bull-fighting rink, telling Jesse how he allows his kid to view anything he wants because he feels it's good to educate him.  And then Marty tells Jesse how his father was arrested and jailed for sleeping with a 16 year-old.  Boy, those Mexicans sure love sex, huh?  I can't believe Jesse's parents allowed their son to play with one!

This brings me to a fundamental thrust: why did this group use Mexicans as the "bad guys?"  Is there any point whatsoever to making them dark skinned as opposed to someone who looks like Jesse?  Or do people who look like Jesse never wack off to pictures from Seventeen.  While this may earn me a cease-and-desist letter from the group, I'm outright saying that this comic smacks of racism.  You can read the entire comic by clicking here.

If you haven't seen them already, you should check out "Jack Chick" comics. They make these look like the best of Neil Gaiman.

Do these really make you mad? I think they're delightful!

"Wait a second, Bible Boy! Man evolving from apes has been a well accepted teaching in our public schools for years!"

LOL!

Geez... look at the guy who's behind it all:

Tim Todd, publisher of "The Truth for Youth"

He looks like one of those puppets from the old "Thunderbirds" show!

Ah, you are young and idealistic. Your heart is pure, you want to save the world. But consider this -- in the journey of life, somebody has to ride on the short bus.

Someday you will make your career, possibly in the sciences, and you will have all the less competition due to these self-inflicted lobotomies called religious beliefs.

:-)

Great stuff. These comics are the main source of information for many of the folks we debate with on the evolution threads. Nothing wrong with publishing them, but I'm always amazed when people think they're getting an accurate description of evolution.
