U.S. President George W. Bush helped repair a trail and build a footbridge along the Au Sable River at the base of Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks on a snowy Earth Day today. He traveled to upstate New York to launch his "Clear Skies" initiative aimed at combating air pollution.
Also today President Bush handed out awards at the National Medal of Arts Ceremony at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. to such people as singer Johnny Cash, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, director Mike Nichols, illustrator Jose Cisneros, painter Helen Frankenthaler, child psychologist Robert Coles, artistic director Judith Jamison, writer Rudolfo Anaya, author Tom Wolfe, and actor Kirk Douglas.
