M. Le Pen is an economic protectionist in favour of the minimum wage, lavish subsidies for France's incompetent industries and inefficient agriculture; he's anti-American and fiercely opposed to globalization.

Wow! Maybe in a few years when M. Le Pen is of an even more advanced age than his current advanced age, Pat Buchanan can go over there and continue what Le Pen started.

The above describes Pat Buchanan in every particular.

Yep. This event seems to be the equivalent of Pat Buchanan winning the '92 New Hampshire primary.

This article again makes the point about how useless the left/right description is--a one dimensional paradigm when something multidimensional is called for. When "extreme right" can mean advocating totally restricted government on one hand, and advocating protectionist statism on the other, and they are both considered "conservatism"--and what does that word mean, anyway? Traditionalism? If conservatism is just traditionalism, well, that can mean socialism, if it happens to be traditional.

Ouch. Okay, that's enough brain torture for a Friday.

"The above describes Pat Buchanan in every particular."

Pat is anti-NAFTA, Anti-GATT, and anti-globalization. And he has a lot of support on those issues. But you can not say honestly that Pat is anti-American.

Or, President Bush :

The Member for the southern New South Wales federal seat of Riverina, Kay Hull, says the proposed subsidies in the United States Farm Bill are almost obscene. A US congressional committee has reached agreement on the 10 year bill, increasing subsidies by 70 per cent to the country's corn, cotton, rice and wheat growers. Federal Agriculture Minister Warren Truss is considering taking the case to the World Trade Organisation.
