These signals, encoding movements like wiggling fingers and feelings like shock and pain, will be transmitted to a computer and recorded for the first time.

This is not good news. That which is recorded can be played back, and it is not that difficult to induce an electrical current in something that is many meters away.

I hate to say it, but a tin-foil hat may not be good enough in coming years. We may need head-to-toe tin-foil body suits.

"We can rebuild him."

That may be easier than re-building his career.

The first human cyborg? Hardly

There are millions of humans that are fitted with mechanical parts. One dear friend of mine has two artificial hips and two artificial knees. Not surprisingly her friends and family call her the six million dollar woman.

>There are millions of humans that are fitted with mechanical parts.

That's a good point. The process of coming to see human beings as just fancy mechanical contraptions started long before computers came along. But, typically, the word "cyborg" is keyed to the "cyb-" part, which is short for cybernetic organism, i.e., a control system, a system involving feedback of one or various kinds between the human and the added part(s).

To my eyes, still the very best story (novel, not movie) of such stuff is Crichton's The Terminal Man:
