Clinton Gets Mideast Role, Meets with Crown Prince Abdullah

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal revealed Saturday night that disgraced ex-president Bill Clinton met with Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah in Texas on Friday, in an apparent reversal of previous Bush administration statements suggesting that Clinton would play no role in the current Mideast crisis.

Al-Faisal confirmed the Clinton-Abdullah meeting during this exchange with Fox News Channel's Rita Cosby:

COSBY: In the last few days I understand that you and your team have met with some former presidents down there in Texas. Bush senior, the father of the current president. And also former president Bill Clinton.

AL-FAISAL: Indeed. Indeed.

COSBY: Tell me about those meetings and what role are they playing.

AL-FAISAL: Well, they're both great friends of the crown prince. He was very happy to meet with them. He was very happy to reminisce with them on the times when they worked together.

And they had good long discussions - both extending (to) perhaps three hours of talks. They talked about, of course, serious talk - the situation in the Middle East.

COSBY: Are they playing an advisory role - or any sort of advisory role?

AL-FAISAL: Well, no - we don't know about that, that they are playing an advisory role for the government of the United States. But, as for the talks, it was an exchange of views between old friends and that was it. (End of Excerpt)

Asked about a role for Clinton as Bush administration Mideast envoy two weeks ago on NBC's "Meet the Press," National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice suggested there was no need for his help, saying, "We believe that we are on the right course here."

After Rice's statement, Clinton publicly volunteered himself as Mideast envoy, an offer duplicated by former president Jimmy Carter.

The dual offers were rebuffed by Secretary of State Colin Powell, who said last Sunday, "I don't have a role for either of them at the moment, but I'm pleased that they continue to keep their interest in the region."

This is hard to believe if true...

Unless Abdullah is a poker game "buddy" along with Arafat, who was merely making good to Bubba on a few bucks or some other "action".

The ex Liar-in-Chief would dress up as the San Diego Chicken to get press these days.

Color me stupid but I don't see how x42 meeting with the Crown Prince indicates a reversal of the Bush administration's position. This is a free country and if the Crown Prince arranged a meeting with x42 (or vice versa), I don't see that it has anything to do with the current administration.

I may be wrong but I think the government can deny someone the "opportunity" to go overseas to intervene on behalf of the United States; but the President can not deny a private citizen the right to meet with an old acquaintance nor deny them the right to discuss whatever subject they care to discuss (assuming that the topic is not about an illegal activity).

To say the x42 and the Crown Prince had conversation about the situation in the Mideast is a far cry from saying that x42 has any role in the current crisis. Gee, I talk about what's going on over there but that certainly doesn't mean that I am having any influence at all.

I've heard on CNBC, within the last week, that the Saudi royal family has between 1/2 a trillion to as much as 1 trillion dollars invested in the US financial markets.

Anybody have any firm data on this?

Me thinks thou dost protest too much.

We don't know if it's true, but if Clinton met with Abdullah without any fanfare or advance publicity, and in Texas, it's not implausible to speculate that the administration knew about it and/or endorsed it.

The administration appears to be desparate -- which is not in any way reassuring.

If they met at all it was not in an official capacity. What part of Rice and Powell's "we don't need him" is hard to understand.

Kayak what was Bubba doing in Texas if not at the invitation of the President?

Clinton goes to Texas all the time, particularly Austin. Do you think that somehow President Bush can prevent him from crossing the state line? I know that is a pleasing thought, but unfortunately President Bush doesn't have this type of power.

Besides, how do you know that the Crown Prince wasn't conveying a message from 41 and 43 TO Clinton?

Is Texas off limits? Did Clinton meet the Crown Prince at the Ranch?

A trillion dollars ... hmmm ... I guess if we were fair and honest, that wouldn't encourage us to declare them an enemy and thus freeze their assests.

However, since they are so eager to pay the families of victims of 'Israeli aggression', including families whose children became homicide bombers, perhaps those who lost family members at the WTC on 9-11 should be compensated from Saudi investments here in the US.

Oh, gosh! I forgot all about that law that says that former presidents can only travel about the country at the invitation of the current President, especially if they are going to the home state of the current President. How silly of me!

My guess: x42 (I liked that, Kayak) probably had some unfinished business with the C.P. of S.A. The only way he could pull off a meeting is to have it be somewhat public. Five bucks says x42 is a few bucks richer than he was yesterday.

Is Texas off limits? No, I guess not.

But it should be.

(Just makes me sick thinking about Bubba wiggling his way into all this.)
