But one cannot say enough about what a political incompetent is Karl Rove. In my opinion, he almost single-handedly cost Bush the last election. He has no comprehension of how to motivate normal people. (See Politics 2001--Lessons 2000.)
It really does ill-behoove Republicans to try to ape FDR's efforts in the 1930s to centrally control the Democratic Party. That is not the American way--although I cannot deny that this is not the first time the Republicans have tried it.
