The Growth chart that your pediatrician uses. Does it cover breast fed babies? Because the normal growth rate charts until recently have been based on the weight gains of formula fed babies. It is most definately true that babies and children who are fed cows milk gain weight faster than those who are not. So the chart is not evidence of anything generally.

I have experience in this regard given that my daughter was breast fed for 3 years. We do not eschew cows milk but families we know who do have children who do not fall into the "normal" categories. One such family had their children removed because a doctor was appalled that the family didn't serve cows milk to their children. It was 6 months before the woman got her kids back and they were returned with health problems due to the fact that the foster family disregarded the children's normal diets. It was relatively simple to find a doctor who would demolish the pediatrician's faulty advice and actions but the government doesn't work so fast.

My daughter is 4 years old, was breast-fed for the first 18 months of her life, and weighs over 40 pounds. Try another tack.

This is a normal growth chart put out by the CDC. It covers all babies. These kids were WAY OFF THE CHART as far as normal growth goes. A five sigma difference is a lot. My two and a half year old is skinny for his age (30th percentile at the two year check up) He stepped on the scale with me today and he weighs 32 pounds.
