GOP leader: Palestinians should move to unsettled Arab lands
Jerusalem Post ^ | May 2, 2002 | The Jerusalem Post Internet Staff

The US Congress will vote today on a proposal to recognize the West Bank as sovereign territory belonging to the State of Israel.

Rep. Richard Armey, the Republican Congressional leader, said the Palestinians should build their national home within a neighboring Arab country.

Armey noted Arab nations have large tracts of unsettled territory where the Palestinians could build a nation.

In Armey's opinion, there is no reason for Israel to hand territory over to the Palestinians in exchange for peace.

The White House is urging Congress at this time to dramatically tone down the proposal's language, Israel Radio reported.

I think this is great, but can honesty prevail in this situation?

Nobody ever said "Hey those poor Germans deserve Danzig" after WWII.

Since when must the VICTIM be the ones given the moral high ground?

Even if they are the ones making themselves victims and their methods for acheiving their goals (even though we know their stated goals are horsesh!t) are what should make them international outlaws?

How would you feel if someone kicked you out of your home and stole all of your resources?

Question: Palestine is such a lovely word. What does it mean in English?

Oh wait! It is English.

I think in Hebrew it means Israel.

My understanding of what Israel was like when the Jewish people moved in was that it was mostly desert. As of 1993, arable land is only 17%, permanent crops 4%, permanent pastures 7%, forests and woodland 6% and other (including the Negev desert) is listed at 66%. All in an area about the size of New Jersey.

I know most people will not see it as we do -- that the fact of Israel's existence is part of God's continuing promise to Abraham, transmitted down through Isaac and Jacob. We know how this thing will end. Ishmael will rage, and there will be no peace in the Middle East until Messiah returns....But I think it's also a good bet that Israel will be protected until that event. The Arab nations have no such guarantee of protection -- none that I see in scripture.

I agree. As long as they reject the God of Abraham and Jacob, they cannot expect blessings from Him.

None of the surrounding Arab states contain Jerusalem so Armey's musings are foolish to speak out loud. Even I wouldn't go for abandoning something I'd fought 50 years over.

As you can see from resolution 242 below, it DOES state that Israel should withdraw from the territories occupied during the recent conflict.

I also know of the Middle East History, as I used to work and live in Israel, Jordon, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, so I think I am more than able to comment, unlike some of the participants in this thread, who are armchair viewers and may not have been outside of their state, never mind their country.

I do not agree with killing of anyone, young or old, on either side, but taking only one view, which is what I see from the US media, does not help anyone and ensures the rest of the world will think the USA is biased.

Resolution 242 (1967) of 22 November 1967

The Security Council,

Expressing its continuing concern with the grave situation in the Middle East,

Emphasizing the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in which every State in the area can live in security,

< 2. Affirms further the necessity

(a) For guaranteeing freedom of navigation through international waterways in the area;

(b) For achieving a just settlement of the refugee problem;

(c) For guaranteeing the territorial inviolability and political independence of every State in the area, through measures including the establishment of demilitarized zones;

I sent this FR link to a friend who isn't a FReeper (yet :D), and she asked me to post her thoughts on this subject:

"The G" writes: " I've thought quite a bit about how the Saudi acting-king, Abdullah, rages and fumes about the Israel/Palestinian "situation." No one brings out that those Palestinians who settled in Saudi were never allowed Saudi citizenship. Their children are not allowed Saudi citizenship. They are forced to remain papered Palestinians. They are not "assimilated" into the culture. If they want to do business they are required to pay an enormous portion of any profit they make to a designated friend of the king who does NOTHING for them but accept the money. Man! What glory to be a friend of the king in Saudi.

The entire middle-east treats Palestinians just the way you've (Matchett-PI) described it: as cannon fodder. They are the "n*****s" of the middle east. The Palestinians we know here are looked down upon by other middle easterners and considered "trash."

One man I know was, as a youth, in love with a Saudi young girl. When they both were old enough, he went to the girl's father and asked to marry her. He was refused because "You don't have a country. You have no way to support my daughter. You don't even have a 'home' where she can live."

So...when thinking about the righteous outrage affected by the Saudi leader, remember that he speaketh with forked tongue. He is no friend of Palestinians.

A Lebanese friend of our said that their country made a terrible mistake with the Palestinians, too. Instead of welcoming them, the way Americans welcome those from other cultures, and helping them to settle and become Lebanese citizens, they isolated them in refugee camps. "We put fences around them, then we dumped our garbage over the fences."

He said they should have learned from American to let those people who come use the best of themselves to strengthen the country, rather than the worst of themselves to destabilize it.

Of course we've taken in some who have done terrible things. But, for the most part, those who have come have brought their very best, have taught us so much and have expanded life in creative and valuable ways too numerous to even begin counting. Are we congratulated for our good fortune, or vilified for our stupidity? Doesn't matter. We're laughing all the way to the bank! It is because "we understand" that we didn't copy Europe in general and France, in particular, in mean spirited violence.

There are one billion angry Moslems on this planet. etc.

GOOD THINKING!!! You know, there untold billions of mosquitoes too. We have infestations of Fire Ants, and I hear Killer Bees are on their way up from Mexico!

Using your logic, we need to scramble, and fast!!!

Top strategies:

1. Recruit and train special human donors to free the rest of the population from the pests.
2. Accept a "flesh tax" of 15%/year for every man, woman and child.
3. Care to add your own???

I don't know about you, Phil... but your argument of a billion angry moslems smacks too much of paying ransom as hostages. You can do what you want, but I am not going to be held hostage by the animals. Otherwise, you will then need to pay off every other blood sucking angry constituency on the planet.

I wish you luck, but don't get in my way.

Well, the Israelis are NEVER going to give them Jerusalem, so they might as well go back to Jordan where they came from.

It seems that you only read the quotes from the Bible that you like princess. God also told the Jews that if they became apostate and did not follow His Laws that he would send them out of the land.(Deut. 28:64 Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will serve other gods) That dispersion has gone on for 1900 years and may happen again unless the Jews repent of their secular, Godless tendencies and bend the knee to the one true God and Messiah, Jesus Christ.

And what did you do, quit reading the Bible at Deuteronomy??? Shirley, you know that in 2nd Chronicles (the last book in the Jewish Bible) GOD gave his last command to the Jews to GET BACK TO ISRAEL, PRONTO...

Everybody's a Bible scholar these days...

Huh??? What sovereign, patriotic American gives a flip about what some communistic united nations says, thinks or does??? Why don't we ask what Saddam Hussein or Michael Jackson thinks about it...Or Rosie O'Donnell for that matter...That would be just as significant...
