Most Americans say the United States is a Christian nation and religious faith is the basis of the nation's strength, according to a new poll.

The survey, released yesterday by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, also found that Americans were worried religion might be losing influence in the nation, while Southerners were most likely to agree that the United States enjoyed "special protection from God."

84 percent say religious belief isn't necessary to be a good American citizen.

The catch is, what does "good" mean. If it means to act in a generally civilized manner and benefit the country in some earthly fashion, then one answer follows. But if it means to be counted as righteous in the sight of the One who judges peoples and countries, then the other answer follows. "Without faith it is impossible to please God."

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

I don't know how much, if any, "special protection" God gives America, but I'm convinced that because we overwhelmingly believe in God, it makes us more successful as a country. Look at Europe, for example. The percentage of people who believe in God and attend church is way, way, lower than it is here.
