Europe chose socialism uber alles, even in the face of the soviet threat. America, acting in its own self-interest, provided for their defense, too. A socialist Europe was better for us than a communist one.
But socialism is a drug, and now that the chief danger is gone, Europe wants a socialist America, too. That prevents America from being a daily rebuke to their chosen way of life. Junkies always try to recruit more addicts.
Of course, all socialists believe that there is such a thing as a free lunch, and they are entitled to it. So they want a socialist America that follows the euroweenies' whims, but is still strong enough to protect them, even at the cost of American lives and treasure. Socialism, to them, means having their cake and eating it, too. Especially with the Americans doing all the baking.
Any American action that appears to be taken without Europe's blessing is considered by Europe to be a slap in their face. That's the price they have chosen to pay in order to lecture us without having anything to back up their hollow words.
