Campaign to record claims of Jewish refugees from Muslim lands

By MELISSA RADLER

NEW YORK – Decades after Jews were forced to flee the Arab world, the Justice Ministry and the American Sephardi Federation (ASF) are launching a worldwide campaign to register every one of the 850,000 Jews who fled the Muslim world after the establishment of Israel, Justice Minister Meir Sheetrit and ASF director Vivienne Roumani-Denn announced on Friday.

The decision to register the property of Jewish refugees was made in March when the government passed a resolution calling on the Justice Ministry to record Jewish claims from Muslim lands dating back to 1940. ASF and other Jewish groups will help the ministry compile the claims.

While Jewish assets in the Arab world were believed to surpass Palestinian claims in Israel, ASF vice president Marlene Brill said collecting money is not on the agenda.

“We are not going to go after claims. We want to get the information into the hands of the Israeli government and use this information to achieve peace,” she said.

Sheetrit joined forces with ASF and 26 Diaspora organizations in an effort to counter Palestinian demands for the right of return, and educate the world on Israel’s integration of its refugee population as it built a new state, fought a war for survival, and recovered from the trauma of the Holocaust, he said.

“At the same time that there were Palestinian refugees, there were hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees,” said Sheetrit, whose family fled Morocco in 1957. “The difference was that in the Arab world, they tried to keep the refugees in refugee camps. In our case, the Israeli state took them all in. We did not try to use them as a political tool... ”

An additional goal for Sheetrit is to educate Israeli youth on the rich history of Jews whose families came from Muslim lands, and their treatment under Arab rule. “It is very important for future generations of Israelis to understand what happened,” he said.

Israel first tried to compile data on Jewish claims in the Arab world in 1969, though few resources were put into the campaign, and documents that were submitted were all but forgotten.

ASF officials attributed renewed efforts on the issue to increased public interest and statements of support from American officials, including former president Bill Clinton.

Clinton raised the possibility at Camp David in 2000 of an international fund to compensate all refugees from the Arab-Israeli wars, including Jews from Arab lands.

The new campaign includes the preservation of existing claims on microfilm and computers, an effort to record all private and communal property, and recording the testimonies of those who were persecuted, expelled, or otherwise forced to flee.

A documentary on Jewish refugees is being made, and the ASF is raising funds to publicize the effort.

Sheetrit said he hopes that a full list of claims, verified by Justice Ministry researchers, will be completed and made available to the public within a year.

Online claim form can be found at ASF’s website, www.asfonline.org

I may completely change my mind about reparations. Although I was born and lived all my life in the U.S., and I am not jewish, I think I will file a claim and get on the reparations bandwagon. Even though I am white I think I will also try to get reparations for my ancestors being slaves.

More seriouser, I think the Jews should document their experiences in Arab lands and any claims they may have.

Well, they're finally learning public relations. The Arab world and collaborationist guilt-ridden dupes in the west in a way are gaining ground in their project to define the "jews" as unjust white interlopers in the territory of darker skinned folk. Despite the hysteria otherwise, Israel has made its case poorly in the international media, though many now come to understand the issue of Israel's acceptance by its neighbors was not settled - but more in doubt.

The addition to the conversation about Israel that they are half Arab is an obvious meaningful point, but little pressed in the past. This will expand the context of the discussion of the "legitimacy" of the state.

When Arafat predictably uses the "reparations" for "refugees" argument to block the peace he has never wanted, the Israelis should put on the table reparations for its refugees - it's legitimate, and could bring a final "settlement of accounts" flavor to negotiations. The best result is for the House of Saud to pay off both sides, but such is a dream...

...the 850,000 Jews who fled the Muslim world after the establishment of Israel...

There were more Jewish refugees than Arab refugees. And they were real people whose lives were totally disrupted.

I know a Jewish woman here in NC whose father operated the only steel mill in the mid-east, in Alexandria. They lived in a mansion on the sea.

After the 1948 war, the Egyptians periodically arrested the father for spying for Israel. They knew he wasn't a spy. They just wanted the bribes necessary to get him out of jail.

They fled Egypt during the 1956 war, losing everything. The father, after several years of wandering, managed to get a job in the U.S. working for a steel company.

It's about time they did this. The solution would be to trade Arab lands confiscated to the Palestinians in payment for Israeli lands that are claimed. Even steven, all paid and put to a zero account.

I'll bet that there's no steel mill now in Alexandria.

My understanding of the Middle East may not be perfect but I think I have the big picture. For several thousand years jews and arabs (for lack of a better grouping) wandered back and forth over the place and into Europe and elsewhere. Jeruselum obviously was the center of the Jewish nation, while most other places were arabic. HOwever Jews were established in most major centers by the time of the Roman conquest of Judea, including Alexandria in Egypt and Rome itself.

One scholar I read says that Herod was in fact, an arab, the Herod family was used by the Romans to adminster several of their provinces, including some on the European continent.

Along about 1200 the Ottoman's came in and consolidated the region under their rule. Basically they didn't put up with much civil protest. In WW1 the British overthrew the Ottomans, and gave their arab allies most of the land, creating out of their minds little nations so that the various arab factions could all have their little domains. TransJordan, etc.

The British kept Palestine because of the strong Jewish presence and they knew it would be a bad idea to turn it over to Feisal and his relatives. After WWII the Jews stepped up their campaign to make Palestine their homeland, the British got tired of it, and the UN declared Israel a nation, giving what little the British had not given to the arabs, to the Jews.

But the arabs have not been satisfied, having received 99% of what was stripped from the Turks. They have to have 99.5%, and create yet another fictious arab nation out of the region along with JOrdan, TransJordan , Lebanon, etc. This new one is Palestine.
