FWIW, Hawaii wasn't a State until 1959. Not sure of its status priot to 1959. Protectorate? Regardless, the argument that it was only a "Posession" in 1941 may not be entirely unfounded.

Say what you want about the status of the Hawaiian Islands in 1941, but the naval and air bases located there were defacto American soil, period.
