Two Arrested In Teen Mall Brawl
No Injuries Reported Despite Widespread Violence

POSTED: 4:29 p.m. CDT May 23, 2002
UPDATED: 9:37 p.m. CDT May 23, 2002

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A fight broke out at a North Texas shopping mall Thursday afternoon, creating a frenzied scene. Hundreds of brawling teens flooded from the Parks Mall in a sea of flying fists and kicking legs.

Several separate battles would follow as the teens waged their wars and police and mall security tried to calm the crowd.

An unusually large number of high school students were hanging around the mall Thursday. According to the Dallas Independent School District, the teens had been let out of school early because it was their last day of class for the year.

One group of teens had been wandering the mall, harassing and even getting physical with other customers, according to Christy Gilfour, of the Arlington Police Department.

"They were creating a disturbance, pushing some customers, causing some minor property damage. And they were asked ... to leave and began being escorted out by officers," Gilfour said.

The ousting, however, quickly led to pushing and shoving and then exploded into an all-out brawl inside the mall, Gilfour said.

Once outside, things only got worse. As the students ran from the building, Chopper 5 captured even more fighting.

Pockets of battles peppered the sea of bodies flowing into the parking lot.

Our helicopter camera recorded several students being punched and kicked in their faces and pummeled about their bodies. Several crazed groups ganged up on individuals, repeatedly attacking them from all angles.

Arlington police rushed to the scene and began trying to break up the crowd. They arrested two adults for assault, according to Gilfour, but it's not yet known if they were high school students.

Despite the violence, there were no injuries reported.

"Hundreds of brawling teens"? What is this?Isn't Texas a Concealed Carry State? And nobody was carrying? What do these 'fairly dressed thugs' have to be angry about?

I hate to say it, but whenever I hear about an event like this happening, the first thing that comes to mind is "Were the people involved black or Hispanic?". Sadly, in the vast majority of cases like this one, it turns out that one or both of these racial groups are involved. I'm not saying that there were no white students involved in this fight, but from the photos posted here, most of the students who were fighting appear to be black.

My personal feeling is that I am not required by the constitution to obey unconsitutional laws. It's better not to register to conceal carry, because the law feels you are educated about where you are not suppose to take a weapon. It's far better to have it when you need it and then play dumb.

Yeah, in my town, I noticed the high school students out early. I went to Subway for lunch, and they were standing all out in front of the Kroger Shopping Center, including the Subway. At least they didn't cause a ruccus, so I'm not complaining.

Evaginatarian = Libertarian whose skull has evaginated from the pressure and stress of all of that convoluted thinking.

Taco eating might have something to do with it, too. Especially, if he was eating nothing but tacos, in that tent of his, for a whole week.

One spark near Hop's tent and the whole area would, probably, go up like a fuel/air bomb.

LOL.

That's the Bush 'master plan'. Take money away from the American family and send it off to the families of future Republicans, no matter where in the world they might be.

This becomming too common at malls al across the country. Well, maybe except like in Bevery Hills or Boca Raton where its 99% white.

Won't matter. The latest thing is bus service from inner cities to suburban malls. "To provide employment opportunities, ya'know?"

I fully respect your view. For discussion, here are a few reasons for having a concealed handgun license:

One, having a license makes one legal to carry, so why not; and some of us cannot risk going to jail (even if we were morally correct) because of our obligations to others who depend on us. Two, it indicates to a police officer that the holder has passed a state and federal background check. Three, politicians respond when a large number of constituents are licensed. Four, if you are ever involved in a justified shooting in Texas, the Texas trooper in charge of licensing will likely testify in your favor (he is a big supporter of the program). Five, ignorance of the law is no excuse (please refer to a criminal lawyer for legal advise, not me), so not having a license cannot help. Six, a license holder can instantly purchase a handgun. Seven, laws (unconstitutional or not) rarely change overnight, and a license is only one step; it took us 120 years to get to where we are today, it may take a long time to fully restore 2nd A rights.

It's no surprise that both Telemundo and Univision news in Los Angeles are using this as their lead story while the network news, local broadcast news, and cable news are saying nothing about it. Long weekend + Spanish-language TV agitators could mean trouble.

Come to think about it, I don't remember seeing anything about this on our local ABC affiliate. Arlington is between Dallas and Fort Worth on I-30.

I still can't figure out why anyone broadcasting a TV signal in the USA wouldn't be compelled to include an English language text box. Hell, most english language programs provide them for deef folk, and they are probly less than 3 percent of the population. Why shouldn't TV stations broadcasting in the US not be required to provide this, eh? Spies, infiltrators, leftists, members of the Kennedy family, and MTV style buffoons: that's why, I say.
