The Bush administration has stepped up pressure on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to halt the infiltration of Islamic militants into Indian-controlled Kashmir, a move U.S. officials hope will calm tensions that threaten to trigger a war between the nuclear-armed countries.
The U.S. diplomatic strategy, closely coordinated with Britain, is aimed at keeping India from launching military operations against Pakistan before Musharraf's orders to stop the cross-border movement of anti-India militants have a chance to filter down to his field commanders, officials said.
