Cynthia McKinney is the ranking minority member of that subcommittee (as well as being a minority member of the House International Relations Committee, of which the subcommittee is a part.) Cynthia McKinney would have been responsible for the appointment of Elgindy to that staff position.

Aristeides, I saw you post this on the FBI thread. Can you, or anyone else here, spell it out how this appointment was made? I had read on a different MB that he was a Bush appointment. And that he's been there for 2 years now. Starting perhaps with this:

Background: The US Commission on Religious Freedom, which was established by an Act of Congress in late 1999, is planning a visit to Egypt on March 19, 2001(next week). The commission has employed among its staff an Egyptian Muslim Named (Khaled Elgindy) as an analyst. The commission is planning on visiting Egypt in two weeks and hopes to use Mr. Elgindyy as a translator. --------From ------ http://216.239.37.100/search?q=cache:zugCA5XvFUsC:www.geocities.com/bisher_rihani/view_guestbook.html+Khaled+Elgindy&hl=en

Here's the some interesting text on Khaled:

We think this is not acceptable. The issue here is NOT that Mr. Elgindy is a Muslim. The issue is the preexisting views for Mr.Elgindy that don't support any sort of Human Rights for the Copts in Egypt. The views of Mr.Elgindy seem to be on the extreme side when it comes to advocacy by the Copts outside of Egypt and seem to have developed strong support for the Egyptian Government. These views are expressed in one of his writings before joining the US Commission. You can read this article, written by Khaled Elgunidy and judge for yourself where he stands on the issues. Read his article titled "Diaspora troublemakers" in Cairo Times. http://www.cairotimes.com/content/issues/copts/expats.html The question now is that, will the Copts in Egypt feel comfortable talking about persecution in Egypt in front of an Egyptian Muslim with fanatic views, who works for an American agency? The answer is no. Therefore, if the commission wants to get the truth inside Egypt, they need to leave Mr.Elgindy out of their trip. The next point is, how in the world did the commission chose to have an Egyptian Muslim analyzing the Coptic struggle in Egypt, keeping in mind that Mr.Elgindy is a Muslim with extreme views (not a moderate one). If the situation was reversed, would the Islamic community have allowed the US commission to employee a Serb (Christian) as a researcher on the Kosovo issue? I bet NOT. I belive the US commission on Human Rights have made an enormous mistake in handling this issue. I with other copts have met with the commission privately and asked them to address this issue, but we have not received a favorite response yet. In addition, I have raised the issue in the last public meeting held by the commission (last Friday)and have yet to receive a response. Now is the time that the commission hears from all of you in writing. This is unacceptable and will result in the Coptic struggle being misrepresented at the highest authority on Human Rights in the USA. ACTION: Please write a personal letter to the Chairman of the commission asking him to reassign Mr.Elgindy away from the Coptic issue. I would like for all of you to send your letter by US Mail, so when they receive few thousand letters from us, it will make them think again about the issue. This also so we can register our protest publicy. Since the commission is leaving to Egypt shortly, it is important to send your letter in a day or two at the most. Please take the time to send your letter (see sample letter). Your letter should be addressed to: The Honorable Elliott Abrams Chairman U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom 800 North Capitol Street NW Suite 790 Washington, DC 20002 Thank you for acting FAST! Michael Meunier ===================================================== Sample Letter: Here is a sample letter you can use or just create a new letter. It will be best if you send your own letter. The Honorable Elliott Abrams Chairman U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom 800 North Capitol Street NW Suite 790 Washington, DC 20002 As an American citizen of Coptic origin, I was surprised to learn that the commission has hired among its staff, an individual (Mr. Khaled Elgindy) who has had a history of anti-Copts views that are centered on denying the existence of persecution in Egypt. Some of Mr. Elgindy’s views are well documented in an article published in Cairo Times on February 4, 1999 and titled “Diaspora troublemakers.“ I am outraged to know that the commission now has Mr. ElGindy analyzing the situation in Egypt even though his biased were made known to the commission. It is inconceivable that Mr. ElGindy has had a change of heart since he joined the commission. In fact, it seems that he joined the commission to minimize and downplay the suffering of Christians in the Middle East. At this time I would respectfully ask of the commission to reassign Mr. ElGindy where he has no influence over Egypt’s policy, this to include not traveling to Egypt with the commission on your up coming trip. I believe this issue needs your immediate attention since it goes to the credibility and integrity of the commission. I thank you for the tireless work your perform on behalf of the persecuted worldwide, especially the Copts. Sincerely, -END- This was posted by: now

Somebody on the other thread said that Elgindy's appointment is a minority staff appointment with the House Subcommittee on International Operations and Civil Rights. McKinney is the ranking minority member of that subcommittee, and would thus have the right to choose the appointee.

Even if that person on the other thread was wrong, and Elgindy's is an executive branch appointment, then, if he's been in the job two years, it's not President Bush that would have chosen him.

Today's Washington Times (print edition) has an article on the Copts and the persecution of them in Egypt. I just searched for the article on their Web site, but it seems not to be there.

There is, of course, nothing wrong with being a short. Lots of straight arrows make a killing on the telecom collapse beacuse they saw the depth of it before others did. But Elgindy is a horse of a different color: it appears he a) manipulated stocks; b) traded on inside information; c) corrupted SEC and FBI officals to manipulate stocks and gain inside information; and d) the icing on the cake is that it looks like he had info on 9/11 and traded on that information. Even if it turns out to be thirdhand information, I say he should get his 'nads wired to a cattle prod until he coughs up everything he knows. Oh yeah, so should the fibbies he corrupted.

The question is not about his net worth. You said he was short 2 million before Sept 11th and that was what I wanted to see.

In announcing today's guilty plea, MR. VINEGRAD stated, "With today's plea, JAMES HILL has admitted that he betrayed the trust placed in him as a member of the FBI by repeatedly selling confidential information and obstructing criminal investigations, all for his own personal profit. This plea reflects the fact that no one - not even a member of law enforcement - is above the law.

Thanks for the info. From the September 4, 2001 Press Release you pointed out above.

So they had that one put to bed a week before 9-11 with admitted direct dealing with the mob. Now they've got the guy with Flemmi, Bulger convicted. Also the Elgindy/FBI deal nailed. Hannsen done. All really positive steps for sure.

How many more "dealing" agents does the FBI have? No wonder they're like nervous cats up a tree. eh?

BTW, too bad this isn't also happening in the CIA and DEA. Almost looks like some folks are focused on the FBI. Maybe some good FBI guys/gals can ferret out a few CIA, DEA crooks to spread the clean-up.

Well, you could always go to Google, type in $2 million short Elgindy fbi, and guess what!

DA claims man may have known about 9/11 Prosecutors say he tried to profit from foreknowledge By Seth Hettena Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- An Egyptian-born financial analyst charged in a nationwide stock swindle may have known about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and tried to profit from them, a federal prosecutor said Friday. Amr I. "Tony" Elgindy telephoned his broker on Sept. 10 and asked him to liquidate his children's $300,000 trust account, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Breen told a federal magistrate at Elgindy's detention hearing.

"He made a comment predicting the market would drop to 3,000" at a time when the Dow Jones stock index was at 9,600, Breen said. "Perhaps Mr. Elgindy had pre-knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks. Instead of trying to report it, he tried to profit from it."

The broker at the investment firm of Salomon Smith Barney has been interviewed by the FBI, which is investigating whether Elgindy had advance knowledge of the attacks.

"Mr. Elgindy is potentially facing more serious charges," Breen said.

Elgindy, 34, of Encinitas, was ordered held without bond on charges of racketeering, extortion and obstruction of justice. Before issuing the order, Magistrate Judge John Houston said he was going to "disregard" the suggestion that Elgindy had anything to do with the terror attacks.

Elgindy, a so-called short-seller who gambles that a stock's price will fall, wore a tan jumpsuit and did not speak during the hourlong hearing. His attorney, Jeanne Knight, said Elgindy did call his broker to make a trade, but the timing was coincidental and the market had been dropping for months. The broker was unable to liquidate the trust account until Sept. 18, she added.

"It seems like the government, for lack of factual evidence, has decided to smear my client with terrorist innuendoes," Knight said. "This is smacking of racial profiling."

Elgindy had an additional $2 million invested in short positions in the market at the time of the attacks on New York and Washington, his attorney said. Prosecutors said Elgindy would have profited if the market dropped sharply.

Breen made his accusations as prosecutors tried to convince Houston that Elgindy was a flight risk and should be denied bail.

Prosecutors said Elgindy had transferred $700,000 to Lebanon, where he owns a seaside vacation home with his wife.

Knight scoffed at the suggestion that Elgindy might flee.

"He's a capitalist. He doesn't want to move to a Third World country," she argued.

Elgindy, one of five defendants in the case, was arrested May 22 on an indictment issued by a grand jury in Brooklyn, N.Y.

In exchange for money, two FBI agents used confidential databases to provide Elgindy and other co-conspirators with information on publicly traded companies, the indictment said.

Elgindy allegedly spread negative information on the companies on his Web site and to subscribers of his e-mail newsletter, InsideTruth.com, while betting that the companies' stock would go down.

In one case, a former FBI agent searched the agency's confidential National Crime Information Center database and discovered the criminal history of a top executive for a company called Nuclear Solutions, the indictment said. The same day, Elgindy began sending e-mails calling the executive "a convicted felon," then sold the company's stock short, the papers added.

Earlier this week, FBI agents raided Elgindy's $2.2 million mansion. Inside, agents said they found tens of thousands of dollars in cash and gold coins. The government is seeking to seize his fleet of cars, which include a Rolls Royce, a Jaguar and a Humvee.

Agents also found that someone had faxed Elgindy a warning that FBI agents were coming to arrest him.

At the time of the alleged swindle, Elgindy was on probation for an unrelated mail fraud conviction in Texas.

If convicted of all counts, Elgindy faces a maximum 65 years in prison.

------------------------------------------------------------ I realize shorts are a part of the mk't, this guy though was deceptive and willing to steal to profit. I wouldn't put it above him to have gotten word late on the 10th, a heads up for the next day.

It was in January of 2001 and it was a legislative -congressional commission- appointment, not an executive branch appointment.

Whoo, Khaled sure doesn't like Rep. Saxton; here's something he wrote...:

Congress Is Not For the Faint of Heart

To Representative Jim Saxton (R-NJ), Washington, DC, Jan. 5, 1999.

You were absolutely right not to travel to Israel with the president last month. How would it look to your many pro-Israel PAC benefactors who would see you standing next to the president of the United States as he acknowledged to the world for the first time ever by a sitting president that Palestinians were in fact human? That they had been “dispossessed” by Israel and that Palestinians deserve to live “in freedom” and determine their own future on “their own land.” Who could stomach such preposterous assertions? Or worse yet, how would your campaign managers and fund-raisers take the news?

No, Congressman, you did the right thing. You are a man of honor and principle. You are right to oppose the enormous $400 million aid package for the Palestinians. Why that’s more than two weeks’ worth of aid to Israel! Now if we set aside the money Israel uses to maintain its illegal occupation of Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian territory, build hundreds of illegal Jewish-only settlements on confiscated Palestinian land, maintain costly prison space used to house (and torture) thousands of Palestinian political prisoners, and mobilize the hundreds of bulldozers needed to demolish Palestinian homes, why surely something of Israel’s $7 billion aid package must be left over for righteous works.

We need more representatives like you, Mr. Saxton. Congress is not for the faint of heart. We need members of Congress who don’t get squeamish at the sight of carnage like the kind Israel inflicted at Qana in April 1996 when it slaughtered more than 100 civilians in Lebanon seeking shelter as Israeli warplanes rained death and destruction on their villages. After all, Lebanese and Palestinian victims of Israeli terror do not finance your expensive campaigns.

Mr. Saxton, you will be remembered for your unwavering allegiance to Israel. Even when faced with Israel’s continued violation of more than 70 U.N. resolutions your loyalty is undeterred. Even the knowledge that 26 American citizens continue to languish in Israeli jails, some of whom have been tortured and many without charge, is not enough to frustrate your devotion to Israel. If only you had been elected to serve and represent the people of Israel instead of the 3rd District of New Jersey.

Khaled Elgindy, Arlington, VA
