At one time, I believe, the largest boomtown was south of Chicago at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, which was also known as the Joliet Arsenal. It was built in 1941 and, at its peak, employed over 12,000 people and produced over 5.5 megatons of explosives per week.

The arsenal was a big place with 23,500 acres, which equals almost 37 square miles. It contained 200 miles of roads, 166 miles of railroad and 1,462 buildings, including 392 ammunition storage bunkers,

The Joliet Arsenal was active during World War II and the Korean and VietNam conflicts before it was closed in 1977. I believe it was decommissioned in 1992.
