DOJ Says No Credible Evidence That Any Florida Residents Intentionally Denied Voting Rights in 2000

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department said Tuesday it found no credible evidence that any Florida residents were intentionally denied their right to vote in the state that handed George W. Bush his margin of victory in the 2000 presidential election.

The Justice Department, in a letter to Congress, detailed findings so far in its investigation of possible voting irregularities in three Florida counties: Orange, Miami-Dade and Osceola. The department has authorized lawsuits in those counties.

In the letter, the department acknowledged polling problems in the three counties may have led to small numbers of voters choosing to leave the polls without casting ballots.

"While the Civil Rights Division discovered evidence of significant confusion and delay in the three counties, there were relatively few voters who actually did not vote because of these problems," wrote Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd.

He said the small number "doesn't reasonably cast any doubt on President Bush's several hundred vote margin of victory in Florida."

"The Civil Rights Division found no credible evidence in our investigations that Floridians were intentionally denied their right to vote during the November 2000 election," Boyd said.

Poll watchers representing the Democratic Party allege that many voters were turned away.

Boyd said that one of the three counties - he did not say which one - may have employed too few bilingual workers, causing delays in providing assistance.

"This may have resulted in at least 26 voters choosing to leave the polls," the chief enforcer of the nation's civil rights laws wrote Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

Boyd said that his investigators confirmed that a clerk denied poll watchers permission to help four voters who asked for bilingual assistance. The denial constitutes a violation of the Voting Rights Act.

In another of the other three counties - again, the county was not specified - the investigation found two cases of Haitian-American voters being denied language assistance, Boyd said.

However, the investigation was unable to confirm any of about 15 other alleged instances of voters being denied bilingual assistance.

In the third county, political party poll watchers alleged that approximately 140 voters had difficulty casting ballots, "but it appears that in every instance the voter was referred to the Supervisor of Elections office" for assistance, Boyd wrote. "The Civil Rights Division has no evidence that any of these individuals was unable to cast a ballot."

Also in the third county, the Civil Rights Division's investigation "indicated that a lack of bilingual poll workers resulted in considerable confusion at the polls, and that some poll workers were hostile to Hispanic voters."

Boyd has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he expected the three counties to negotiate settlements by the time he's ready to file lawsuits.

Boyd said in an earlier letter that Orange County failed to have enough Spanish-speaking poll workers and didn't provide election information in both Spanish and English.

The government alleges that Miami-Dade officials didn't do enough to help Haitian-American voters understand the ballot, according to a copy of a proposed agreement between the county and the Justice Department.

Osceola County, south of Orlando, is accused of not providing Spanish-speaking voters with election information in their own language. A letter from the Justice Department to Osceola officials also said there were not enough bilingual poll workers.

Gore Bundles of 10 were counted this way... 10,20,40,50,60,80,100. The way they described it!

Maybe not intentional miscounting, could likely reflect the true educational level of the Demoncrats

You will only need to look for the tall buildings to see the DUers jumping after they read this. It will drive them and all the other Lib-Dom-Soc-Comm nuts. Of course, to them, it will be a conspiracy and totally expected from such a corrupt administration. Yahoo!

They will pull out all the stops to win the House and keep the Senate.

You are too right. This could be the most important mid-term election in the last 20 years.
All concientious Freepers need to be active come election day this year.

It's sooner than you think. It's also later than you think.

You are so right and it is freaky! I just don't see what is wrong with English being the official language. Until recently I thought you had to be able to read and write English to become a citizen. Somewhere along the line I missed that change!

Now, Class, what have we learned, other than that Mary Frances Berry is a damn liar.

That even under a Republican administration, systematic, felonious ballot tampering by the Democraps in FL will be swept under the rug?

The government will file three lawsuits against Florida counties alleging voting rights violations resulting from the bitterly disputed 2000 presidential election, a Justice Department official said Tuesday.TWO OTHER LAWSUITS also will be filed, in Missouri and Tennessee, by the department’s civil rights division, Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd told the Senate Judiciary Committee. The lawsuits will allege disparate treatment of minority voters, improper purging of voter rolls, “motor voter” registration violations and failure to provide access to disabled voters, Boyd said. Other charges, he said, include failing to allow voters with limited proficiency in English to have assistance at the...

Since when do you have to be a citizen to vote for a Dem?

You are so right -- you don't have to be a citizen or even alive or human to vote for a Dem! That was an excellent point!

However, if on the date of the examination the applicant is more than 50 years of age and has been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, or the applicant is more than 55 years of age and has been a lawful permanent resident for 15 years or more, the applicant will be exempt from the English language requirement of the law. If exempt, the applicant may take the examination in any language.

To my way of thinking, not learning our language after being a "lawful permanent resident" for 15 or 20 years should be reason enough to disqualify anyone from citizenship.

The DOJ has plenty of credible evidence that overseas servicemen were disenfranchised. They are a bunch of lieing b*st*rds.

The only tampering with voting rights was in the recounting.

I disagree. After being warned by Katherine Harris that 3 counties in Florida fall in the Central Time Zone, VNS and the networks declared Gore the winner in Florida shortly after the Eastern Time Zone polls closed. I've heard reports that up to 10,000 Republican voters in those western counties, figuring the day was lost, didn't bother to vote; some supposedly turned around while on their way to the polls. If discouraging 10,000 + voters (I'm sure there were some Dems in those counties who went to celebrate instead of voting) isn't "tampering", I don't know what is.

Message to the Feds:

OK. I can accept this. But I find myself still awaiting the Federal report (or State report, for that matter) on the RAMPANT VOTER FRAUD in Florida and elsewhere. And you seem to have left out the part about the dimocrats tossing out hundreds, if not thousands of absentee Military ballots in the Florida election.

And while you're at it, howsabout a report on the COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE INS (= Indifferent to National Security) to protect our borders since WE ARE AT WAR!, and muslim "brothers" continue to stream across the border to plot against my country and my families lives.

Just a few questions for the PC-hobbled Federal bureacracy, while you are so busy "investigating" voter "disenfranchisement" (...pardon me while I puke).

PS to the Feds: No need to respond, I think I know the answer. I will call back after 50,000 or so Americans are murdered in the next terrorist attack. "You" are a compelete and utter failure. Good thing I can, to an extent, take care of myself.

Also, I hope every freeper volunteers to be a poll watcher for the next election - and all elections in the future. If we thought the RATS tried to throw the 2000 election, we haven't seen anything yet. They will pull out all the stops to win the House and keep the Senate. Don't even want to think what they will try for the Presidential election. It's time we took action.

Today when I voted in the primary I signed up to be a poll watcher come Nov. You're right. The demonRATS probably have a bunch of people figuring out new ways to cheat at the ballot box. November may be a mess if we don't get our ducks in a row.

Believe you me, if I see any irregularities this November (and I will have my eyes wide open) I am going to scream bloody murder.

Don't just scream it, videotape it.

And we should probably organize FR Election Fraud Squads in every state to be able to immediately converge on any site where a Freeper reporters illegal activity, so we can collect overwhelming amounts of evidence and make multiple 911 calls, FBI calls, etc.
