Education or Indoctrination?

What has happened to our education system? Why do we hear stories about our nation’s youth at risk? We hear stories about the lack of knowledge of basic history of the United States. Then there is my favorite one - rewriting history to make it more appealing to immigrant students, and being more sensitive to slavery. What ever happened to reading, writing, and arithmetic?

I blame the failure of our educational system on the political correct (PC) movement. The educated elite and the multiple layers of bureaucracy are holding us hostage. In 1993 I remember debating the PC movement with some of liberal thinkers known as college students. I predicted that this nonsense would destroy this country, especially the educational system. My argument was simple; we do not need to accept everything we are told. In America we are free to question, study, and debate ideas, but that does not give us a license to rewrite and destroy our history, especially when we use tax dollars. I will admit American history has its dark moments, but that is not a reason to be upset. Think about how far people have advanced in this country, and how we are able to prosper.

Instead of focusing on the three R’s, we have chosen a path of indoctrination and pandering to the liberals by advancing their agenda in our public schools. Math, science, history, reading, etc. have to take a back seat to social issues. It is more important for students to learn about fostering and promoting homosexuality. Many schools have gay lesbian, and bisexual clubs. Some schools are handing out condoms (my high school provided these to us before the Clinton years), which will promote under-age sex. While it is a useful program to help prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, don’t you think the students are under the impression that their school supports teenage sex? Recently the NY Times reported on the two types of condoms available in the nurse’s office at a local public school – regular and mint flavored (for oral sex only). Your hard earned tax dollars are being used to support condom choices. What about using that money in the classroom and not the back seat of some car? What about offering more enrichment programs to help kids get into a better college? Do we want to promote educated youth or do we want to assault traditional values of many Americans? Schools in Texas are more concerned are beginning to get away from the story of the Alamo. It is too offensive for Mexican immigrants to hear about the history of Texas breaking away from Mexico and becoming the 28th State. Once again, our schools rewrite history and the message is that Mexico has a moral claim to Texas.

Now let us visit the Santa Monica High School. Santa Monica also has a condom policy, but that is just the beginning of their problems. Newsmax.com (a great internet news site) interviewed Stephen Miller, a student at Santa Monica High. I will summarize some of the “highlights” from Miller’s interview. It took months for the school to “re-introduce” the Pledge of Allegiance after the terrorism attacks of September 11th. Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day are subject to revisionist rewriting of history. Apparently the prevailing view is that “the US has used its soldiers to kill innocent people, and the same Indians who helped the pilgrims were either shot, or put on reservations.” Miller also reveals that the school’s history teachers denounce the US as “wickedly imperialistic.” After 9-11 the school invited a Muslim leader to explain the splendor of Islam, and the school newspaper condemned the US attacks on Afghanistan. (www.newsmax.com/archive/print.shtml?a=2002/4/28/113317)

Why do I bring up these stories? I am concerned that we are not educating our future. Today’s youth is the future of this country. These students will eventually enter our workforce and they will be responsible for making public policy decisions. We are too afraid of offending someone. We have chosen to promote social issues “we need to understand _______” fill in the blank. Sadly our children are being brought up to hate American history, its policies, and government. I believe every child has the right to an education, not a liberal indoctrination. Schools are a place for our children to learn the skills, which will make them productive members of society. As they mature they should be making their own decisions. We do not need the teachers, administrators, and local school boards advancing their social and political agenda. Students need an objective environment, which is conducive to learning. Let the parents be responsible for sexual education, sexuality, and other social issues. Let’s return honor and pride to our schools.

Remember, February is "Black History Month" (it is also the shortest month of the year, heh heh).

Or maybe we need more conservatives in the schools?

We can surrender them to the liberals or we can take them back.

While the author of this article makes a lot of good points, he's probably not going to win any awards for his writing style. This piece needs editing, badly.

By the way, a note of caution--when someone rails against the 'educated elite,' the reader will assume he is uneducated and, well...NOT elite. I'm not saying that's the truth, but statements like that just scream 'class envy.'

I came upon an idea yesterday that people should advance to their local school boards. I belive it would have a profound effect on what teachers think they can get away with in the class room.

Mandate that ALL work done by students be submitted to parents at the end of each quarter/semester. This would include any petitions signed, etc. This would give parents the following:
1. Parents get to see what questions their children are supposed to answer 'correctly', and expose the bias that their children are forced to regurgitate to get good grades.
2. Parents would be able to see that a 23% on a history test can be a B+ or an A!
3. Parents would be able to read the liberal drivel that their children write in their papers after being indoctrinated into the sick, dimented philosophy that their professors force on them on a daily basis.

The liberals would argue that this would have a chilling effect on the "personal development" of students political/philosophical development. The counter is that a school does not have the right to impose the direction of a child's development in our schools -- that is a job for parents and our greater culture. If their is a 'chilling' effect, then obviously, the students are not comfortable with their 'own' views... Otherwise they would be happy to confront their parents with their ideas, rather than adopting them to become 'accepted' by their peers and professors.

Most teachers aren't trying to "get away with things" in the classroom....in part, what's done in the classroom reflects the community. In very conservative areas, most of the teachers are conservatives too, or they don't last. In other areas, they're liberals, and they really believe what they are doing is correct.

Mandate that ALL work done by students be submitted to parents at the end of each quarter/semester.

Most work is given back to the students anyway. Who has room (or inclination) to store all that stuff? Go through your child's book bag & ask for his or her papers.
