Al Queda threats against local apartments
local friend | D G Lang

Posted on 05/31/2002 10:20:41 PM PDT by dglang

My friend just told me that when he came home yesterday, The FBI had posted notices all over at the apartments where he was living that the AlQueda made a direct threat of blowing up that apartment complex because there were a lot of Delta airlines pilots staying there.

He advised me that Delta had some type of deal with the apartments, Stonebrook apartments in Sanford florida, which may have included partial ownership.

The apartments are located very close to Sanford International Airport also in Sanford Florida.

I had often wondered about all the pilot trainees that were residing there since the 9/11 WTC bombings and I had noticed that there were a lot of middle eastern types present whenever I've been there.

These apartments are also not too far from Daytona Beach which has a flight school, Emery Riddle, which has come up often in terrorist discusions in the past. While I was aware of the flight school, I never had connected the apartments with the Sanford Airport even though my friend told me about all the student pilots staying there.

The FBI notice mentioned something about the local residents leaving for their safety or peace of mind.

I haven't seen anything on the local news about this yet.

Perhaps this is related to the generalized warning about terrorists wanting to rent apartments just to blow them up. In this case it seems, this is more than just a 'generalized warning, but rather a specific threat being made against this particular apartment complex.

His "friend" told him about the flyers so of course the poster hasn't seen one. You'd think his "friend" would have shown him a copy of the flyer or something.

Color me skeptical.

I assume you also saw the restricted and warning area activations and ring around Kennedy Space Center that included a 30-nm "no- fly" zone, posted today here and on AOPA?

Things are warming up there.

I currently haven't got access to a working camera. Also, I suspect that if I was walking around the complex with a camera, I would suddenly find myself a little lacking in freedom. Perhaps a resident of those apartments could chip in with a picture if one is lurking here.

Considering the number of threats our intelligence agencies receive each day, most of which are bogus, I anticipate a number of false alarms. The success of terrorism lies in making people live in fear, and a constant stream of threats without action serves their purpose almost as well.

However, unlike Israel, we are a vast country with millions of possibilities for terrorists, and unless they step forward and boast of their deeds, we may never know whether the 90-car pile-up in Georgia, the train de-railments, or the bridge collapsing in Oklahoma, or countless other catastrophies that occur are the result of terrorism, or that the guy at the wheel simply blacked out.

But I like being fore-warned of threats being made. It means my government trusts me enough not to panic, but to take reasonable precautions -- while being more vigilant about those around me in public places.

Sounds like the apartment complex put out a flyer in response to and explaining the general FBI warning. Your friend skimmed it, remembered the word FBI, got excited, and jumped to the conclusion that 2+2=666.

I'm pretty sure that there's a large restricted flight area around the Cape during all launches, so I wouldn't necessarily chalk this up to increased terror awareness.

Doing a bit of Google research, I couldn't find any specific alert for Sanford. I saw an article on CNN about a prior train derailment killing 6 (http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/04/18/amtrak.derailment/) in your area and notice that you are close to Orlando.

Apartment residents should contact the authorities (local police and FBI) if they have any questions regarding local alerts.

Maybe an FBI rookie was told to put out a notice, warning flyers of potential terrorist threats and the rookie did just that,.....discovered some threats at apartments then posted 'flyers'.

Delta does not provide service out of Sanford Airport. Maybe the pilots were training somewhere as you say. Still this story doesn't make much sense. I haven't seen any local Orlando coverage on this. But there was a story on the news about cheese food products.

Hmmmm. Interesting. Pay attention to who buys the apartment building when it comes up for sale.

Has your friend noticed any increase in building security since the flyers went up?

Roger Hedgcock, filling in for Rush Limbaugh about a week ago, mentioned that as an apartment building owner he received a notice from the federal government that apartment buildings might be targets. That terrorists might rent apartments in buildings and then pack the apartment with a bomb, thus destroying the building.

Some apartment building owners may have chosen not to pass that information on to all the tenants.

Roger lives in California...San Diego, I believe.
