Hate to break the bad news to you, but this has nothing to do with Bush. If the 'RATs had pushed a 'reasonable bill' and passed it, Bush would sign it. Of that there can be no doubt. No, the 'RATs have finally realized that the gun issue cost them the Presidency and if you go back to '94, cost them the Congress.
Honestly, it isn't worth the political capital right now to work on repealing them since they sunset in a couple years. The big fight will be over reauthorization and I'm sure the administration is preparing for the battle. It'll also be a big help to be in control of both the House and Senate at that time, which makes this November's elections even more poignant.
