Here's the problem. To Bush, like most conservatives, this global warming stuff is not a major issue. Whether it's happening or not, there is very little we can do about it, and we don't believe the disaster scenarios so it's not worth a lot of effort.

Since it's so low on his priority list, Bush made political payback appointments, like Christine Todd Whitman, without considering that their enviro-whacky views might actually be relevant. Now he's burned by it, because yellow journalists and leftists think global warming is one of the MOST important issues.

I don't think Bush has any intention of doing anything drastic about the global warming issue. To conservatives, this is much ado about nothing. Global warming is the fashionable leftist doomsday scenario of the day - just like global cooling was in the 70's, and nuclear war was in the 80's. That makes it a political issue, rather than a scientific or administrative one. And that makes Bush's political neglect of this part of his administration such a poor reflection on him.

"Here's the problem. To Bush, like most conservatives, this global warming stuff is not a major issue."

Perceptive assessment.

The only people who take it seriously are the enviro-whackos and their friends in the media. Aside from the occasional soccer mom, I doubt the public gives a damn either.

Problem is, he gave the libs and the media something to howl about. And, weak as it is, the environment is a better issue for the Dems than Enron, the War on Terrorism or "what did he know and when did he know it?".

Accordingly, we can expect to be hit over the head with this "wiffle bat" for the balance of the campaign season. It won't hurt much; but it will be annoying as hell...
