'Jewish Republican' Isn't an Oxymoron
Wall St Journal ^ | 6-10-02 | RONALD S. LAUDER

Edited on 04/22/2004 11:46:36 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

Somewhere between the presidential elections of 1928 and 1932, Jewish voters switched parties.

Jews were historically Republicans, and they came, in the 19th century, for the most part from Germany. But the massive waves of Eastern European immigrants around 1900 swamped the German Jewish population, and the big city political machines brought them into the Democratic Party. In 1932, FDR sealed the deal.

Bush has a golden opportunity here. Too bad he seems dedicated to blowing it by engaging in wishy washy pandering to the Palestinians and the Saudis when he should be solidly 100% behind Israel.

But he is most definitely not blowing it with the Jews this time around. His father became a partisan of Arab Oil interests. The son is not that stupid.

Paradoxically, it is this strength with Jews that will allow Bush to be the midwife to a Palestinian State alongside Israel.

If Bush can bring about a modus vivendi between Jews and Pallies, he will become a hero not only to American Jews, but also to many Arabs who are becoming disenchanted with militant Islam. It is the Arab world which may be receptive to a Kemalist interpretation of how the State and Mosque should relate to one another.

Chris

So if you're a Jewish voter, relax. Your arm won't fall off if you pull the Republican lever. After all, 78% of Jewish New Yorkers voted for Rudolph Giuliani, 42% voted for Rick Lazio against Hillary Clinton and 52% voted for Jewish Republican Mike Bloomberg against a Jewish Democrat, Mark Green.

Although I like Mr. Lauder, I wish he had taken a moment to explain why the NY jewish voters threw perhaps their most loyal and ferocious defender overboard at the drop of a dime.....namely Al D'Amato.

IMHO, that's an important political lesson for GWB to take note of, and remember.

If there can be "Jews for Jesus" then surely there can be "Jews for Republicans".

It might be because Al ran a lousy campaign and Chuckie Schumer was a Nice Jewish Boy.

One would hope the latter was more than a borderline cult, though.

It's the American Jews that should finally wake up. They have been voting for a party that would disarm them. You would think that they would take a lesson from the history of other nations what gun control leads to.

"Only 10% historically vote Republican"

I think this figure may represent registration or affiliation with a party but it seems low to me. As a Jew who was raised in a conservative Republican family I can relate to pressures within my community to support the Democratic party. However, I live in Central Pennsylvania and I know at least 40% of the Jews living in this region are registered Republican.

When I went to vote for President Bush in November 2000 I engaged a poll worker (who was a Jewish lady) in a conversation-- my registration had been changed to a different location since the address on my license changed & I wasn't sure where to vote. I commented in passing that my candidate needed every vote if he was to win Pennsylvania. This lady told me to go to the court house in case I needed an expidited registration. I thanked her and told her W needed every vote from Central PA since Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are Democratic strongholds. She then told me she hoped that I wouldn't find the correct polling place, thereby missing my opportunity to vote, and I was wrong to vote Republican. Needless to say I lit her up.

I have lived in New York City and the institutionalized liberal Jews there make me sick. They are the worst kind of socialist lemmings; worse than the Blacks who blindly follow Jesse "Hymietown" Jackson down the road of government funded entitlement. I could care less that Lieberman was Jewish-- he was not as competent as either Bush or Chaney when it came to Domestic policy, and now we have learned with foriegn policy as well.

I believe Jews who continue to support the Democratic party invite anihilation of our faith. The Talmud does not support the principles underpinning the planks of the Democratic party. Homosexuality, Pro-Abortion and limiting the right to defend ourselves are not part and parcell of our religion. The recent reformation in Judaism over the last century has diluted and misrepresented our identity as a culture. Liberal Jews cringe at the mentioning of "Family Values", yet it is precisely these Values which will help to preserve Judaism for our descendants.

Al was not an unknown entity, but rather a great friend and proponent of jewish causes both domestic and international.

IMHO, it was remarkably tawdry treatment.

Kinda sad that Jewish vote is predicated on support of Israel instead of GOP policies in general

I am, of course, mindful of the social concerns of many American Jews, which are at odds with the positions of the Republican Party on issues such as abortion, the environment, and taxation. But why can't Jews fight for these views within the Republican Party, not from without? The GOP has had a long history of pushing this country forward in major social struggles, from slavery to women's suffrage.

The Republican Party is no longer reliably anti-Holocaust, but pro-Holocaust Jews are going to remain with the Democratic Party, unless the Republican Party can be transformed completely into a pro-Holocaust party.

Bump! Not only that, but too many Jews voted for William Jefferson Clinton who was as close in moral value as Adolph Hitler. Neither knew right from wrong. The Jewish slogan "Never Again" seems to be forgotten when it comes to voting for liberal Democrats.

I believe it is the principles of the Republican party that mandate its support of Israel in the face of an unprecedented propaganda campaign comming from radical muslim states. Conservatives seem less apt to buy into this propaganda and the revision of history surrounding the facts of Israel's creation, existence and repeated conflicts with her Arab neighbors. For this reason alone Jews should support the Republican party-- not because of some percieved blind support for Israel, but rather the Republican ideals of supporting freedom, democracy and capitalism ensure a strong allegiance with the Jewish state which mirrors these ideals.

...Because Al D'Amato, the walking stereotype of an obnoxious downstate goombah, ran against Chuck Schumer, the walking stereotype of an obnoxious downstate Jew. Schumer reminds me of those caricatures that Hitler's pals used to put in Der Sturmer. Nevertheless, Al Scumauto was a Lawn Guyland clown whose time had passed.
