Sounds like the kid was out of control. I refuse to believe that a series of foster homes was superior to letting his mother try to discipline. Child Protective Services is out of control in a lot of cases. Government intrusion is way over the top. Government has been responsible for the break-up of our smallest unit of government in too many cases.

Sounds like mom should have found a dad.

My thoughts exactly!

Maybe so. Lack of a Dad is a poor excuse to take the kid away and put him in foster care. The kid has problems not likely to be helped by a merry-go-round of new "parents."

Even so, the director of the county's Department of Health and Human Services, Jim Hunt, said the agency's actions had withstood review by a juvenile court referee and later by a juvenile court judge. "We're not operating in isolation here," said Hunt, who oversees CPS. The whole sysetem is corrupt.

No but mom wasn't able to handle him. That much was apparent by his behavior.

After 2 years in a foster home, rather than his mother, I'm sure we have a wonderful child...

I've got four kids. One of them began acting up at the age of 14. I couldn't handle him either. Eventually I put the police on him and he spent a year in detention. Six years later he is doing okay. I surely didn't neeed CPS to help me in any way. When they tried to stick their nose into my business I shut them out quickly. This happened in a home where everybody cared, Mom and Dad were present, and no deprivation was present. There are some kids who seem to be naturally rebellious. I know that because I was one myself. But I joined the Army at age 17 and they kind of filed off the burrs.

But no child should be whipped with a belt. No wonder the kid was a mental case.

CPS, police, whatever. On the one hand, I doubt we are hearing the real story because the punishment did not sound that severe. On the other hand, this is Californicate. Nuff said.

From the Mom's description of the kid, I wonder why she fought to get him back.

For the record, I was whipped with a belt by my Dad when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. In retrospect most of the whippings were justified and helped control my exuberance. There is such a thing as child abuse but corporal punishment isn't abuse in my opinion. We also got whacked with a paddle at school when we couldn't abide by the rules. I never viewed that as abuse either.
Somewhere along the way things have been seriously screwed up. I am sick and tired of being regulated by the nanny state.

Don't bother arguing by holding up exceptions to the rule, that is the way of the socialists. They find individual exceptions to justify destruction of entire traditions. This is exactly what happens with every new social regulatory policy that undermines our once great culture. Well said.

Speaking of CPS, any news on the Stumbo case here in NC?
To: semper_libertas;movemout
Repercussions from the family's case, which was the subject of a separate appeals court decision last year, have prompted the county to re-examine its definition of child abuse and have fanned the debate over a parent's right to spank. We've come a LONG way, Baby!
Proverbs 13:24
24. He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
Proverbs 22:15
15. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13-14
13. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
14. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.
Proverbs 29:15
15. The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
Deuteronomy 21:18-21
18. If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him,
19. his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town.
20. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard."
21. Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

Stoning to death a son who is stubborn and rebellious may fall into the category of over-correction. The idea is to control contrary behavior. Eliminate the behavior not the son.
