The time limit for the prize has expired, but they continue the project. This might not be manned spaceflight with the X-Prize, and amateur satellites have been put into orbit already on commercial rockets, but just realizing that amateurs can also build and launch their own space rockets without the big corporations and government agencies is somehow encouraging.

but just realizing that amateurs can also build and launch their own space rockets without the big corporations and government agencies is somehow encouraging. And, a good argument for ABM systems.

A group of rocketeers hope the next two weeks will put them in the history books with a vehicle that, if successful, would be the first amateur rocket shot into space.
I thought Andy Griffith already did

Why not use their talents to rocket Syria, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, France, etc. before going to space?

This makes me so happy. People trying to attain a goal without any possible immediate financial reward or government assisstance. Makes me wonder: are there any colleges that have put a rocket into space? Seems like such a project would be a great idea for an engineering college - the effort would require expertise from several engineering fields (chemical, electrical, mechanical, computer science, etc).

If you ever get the chance, go to FireBalls at Blackrock NV in the fall.
These rockets are so powerful, you are 1/4 mile away from the launch site.
