The Neighborhood Bully
by Bob Dylan - 1983

Well, the neighborhood bully, he's just one man,
His enemies say he's on their land.
They got him outnumbered about a million to one,
He got no place to escape to, no place to run.
He's the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive,
He's criticized and condemned for being alive.
He's not supposed to fight back, he's supposed to have thick skin,
He's supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in.
He's the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land,
He's wandered the earth an exiled man.
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn,
He's always on trial for just being born.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized,
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad.
The bombs were meant for him.
He was supposed to feel bad.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That he'll live by the rules that the world makes for him,
'Cause there's a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac.
 He's the neighborhood bully.

He got no allies to really speak of.
What he gets he must pay for, he don't get it out of love.
He buys obsolete weapons and he won't be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, he's surrounded by pacifists who all want peace,
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease.
Now, they wouldn't hurt a fly.
To hurt one they would weep.
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Every empire that's enslaved him is gone,
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon.
He's made a garden of paradise in the desert sand,
In bed with nobody, under no one's command.
 He's the neighborhood bully.

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon,
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on.
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth,
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health.
He's the neighborhood bully.

What's anybody indebted to him for?
Nothin', they say.
He just likes to cause war.
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed,
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed.
He's the neighborhood bully.

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers?
Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill,
Running out the clock, time standing still,
Neighborhood bully.

                                    Play f**king loud!!!!

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

There is a reason why Dylan wore a wig and false beard at the Newport Festival. The promoters of the Ffestival (unlike Springsteen's promoters) allowed Al Gore and family to stand on the side of the stage. Dylan feared that Al Gore who has been known to follow people closely on the stage during performances, would do the same to him. So he donned the disguise and it worked. Al could not figure out which one was Dylan and therefore, Dylan was unmenaced during the show.

BTW a great new book on Dylan just came out. Restless Pilgrim: The Spiritual Journey of Bob Dylan by Scott Marshall

Michael, row the boat ashore,
Hallelujah.
Michael, row the boat ashore,
Hallelujah. Sister, help to trim the sails,
Hallelujah.
Sister, help to trim the sails,
Hallelujah.

River Jordan's deep and wide,
Hallelujah.
Milk and honey on the other side,
Hallelujah.

River Jordan's chilly and cold,
Hallelujah.
Chills the body, but warms the soul,
Hallelujah.

This song has something to do with Micheal Jordan ....not sure what

I think in 1983 Dylan was Jewish again. This guy changes his religion like Hillary changes hairstyles.

He dedicated "My Back Pages" to "my man Jesse" Ventura at a show in Rochester, MN two years ago.

He dedicated "The Times They Are A-Changing" to Wellstone last Monday in Kansas City, when I saw him. I wonder what he thought of the memorial debacle?

Have you heard this? Dylan on piano, sounding like a teenage Jerry Lee Lewis....

Note: this topic is from June 19, 2002. The song is from 1983. The lyrics are about the Jews in Israel. I got thinking about this one a few minutes ago, and a quick peek around turned up this one, my apologies A) for reviving an old topic and B) if I missed an even earlier topic about this. Thanks dennisw. G'night all!
