Oh, I will pray for them and their families. May God bless them all...and our great nation. We need prayer now more than ever.

Ditto on the prayers. As for those suggesting that this is a terrorist attack, I highly doubt it, the islamomaniacs are not that sophisticated to bring down one of our jets.

We had one where a Guard/Reserve Warthog was outbound with a flight to work close air support at Fort Irwin. Pilot winged over and flew into a mountain top, no communications with the rest of the flight, no sound or sign of problems. I believe they tracked it down to cold meds the pilot had taken pre-flight.

That sounds sorta familiar:

Female Air Force jet pilot dies in crash

May 28, 1997

Web posted at: 10:20 p.m. EDT (0220 GMT)

TUCSON, Arizona (CNN) -- One of the few women flying fighter jets for the Air Force died as the A-10 Thunderbolt plane she was flying crashed at a desert training range, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Capt. Amy Lynn Svoboda, 29, a 1989 graduate of the Air Force Academy, was killed while on "a routine training flight" Tuesday, the Air Force said.

"Fragmentary remains have been recovered" from the crash site, a spokesman told CNN. They were flown to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. for positive identification.

The cause of the crash was not confirmed. Investigators picked through the wreckage at the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range, about 50 miles southwest of Phoenix.

Svoboda, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, was about two hours into a training flight with another A-10 when her plane went down, said Capt. Andy White, a base spokesman.

It was the Air Force's first deadly crash involving a female pilot, Pentagon spokesman Lou Timmons said.

After graduating the academy Svoboda went to pilot training at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas, and then remained as an instructor pilot in the T-37 trainer aircraft.

She went to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base for A-10 training in 1996, and was a member of the 354th Fighter Squadron of the 355th Air Wing.

Svoboda was one of six women qualified to pilot an A-10 ground attack aircraft. She had more than 1,400 hours piloting jets, said Maj. Edward Worley, a Pentagon spokesman.

It is the fifth crash of an A-10 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Warthog," in the last eight months. The $8.8 million aircraft is designed to attack ground targets, including tanks, and was used extensively during the Persian Gulf War.

The last A-10 crash was in April, when Capt. Craig Button was at the controls when his plane disappeared. The debris was later found at a crash site in the Colorado Rockies. The cause is still under investigation.

The AF chalked that one up to *pilot error* as well. I'm not certain about the crash that claimed Major Moynihan in Idaho.

Lots of AC use DU as counterweights on control surfaces or trim tabs. Some helicopters use it in the rotor blades to help sustain rotor inertia.

For a nation overrun with greens, France gets an amazing proportion of its power from nuclear energy.

The warthog is a single-seat ground-attack aircraft. I'm not aware of a two-seater training version, but it's possible. The x-tra injuries/dead were probably people on the ground.

I think you are correct. I do know it wasn't our bird--all we had there were the weasels: F16s and F4s. Spang personnel were sent out to clean it up because we were the closest USAF base.

As far as DU goes, I know we cleaned it up all over Eglin ranges. We had a couple of free-fire ranges, strafing targets and a few dummy convoys we were constantly replacing. Those DU rounds leave nothing but swiss cheese. The spent rounds created a bit of a disposal problem, though. We had thousands of nuclear waste barrels filled with them and nowhere to store them.

A10 cockpits are constructed of DU

I believe you are mistaken there. The "bathtub" in which the pilot sits is constructed of titanium and composite materials. Depleted Uranium is used in the ammunition only, as far as I know.

My guess is to keep the Normandy Beach as Hallowed Ground.

But,. do we perform "Flight Check" Operations? People would be surprized to hear of all the countries we assist in that aspect of aviation.
