I believe the A-10 that crashed into a town in the 80's came was stationed at a Forward Operation Location in Germany and was assigned to RAF Bentwaters.
The GAU-8 gun was probably armed with 30mm TP(target practice rds), the only times Depleted Uranium is loaded is for war or an actual exercise that calls for a DU rds.

I think you are correct. I do know it wasn't our bird--all we had there were the weasels: F16s and F4s. Spang personnel were sent out to clean it up because we were the closest USAF base.
As far as DU goes, I know we cleaned it up all over Eglin ranges. We had a couple of free-fire ranges, strafing targets and a few dummy convoys we were constantly replacing. Those DU rounds leave nothing but swiss cheese. The spent rounds created a bit of a disposal problem, though. We had thousands of nuclear waste barrels filled with them and nowhere to store them.
