I think the Davis campaign is right in saying that the electorate will be frightened by the changes Simon would make if he was elected. Problem is that Davis would have to make similar changes if he's unfortunate enough to win the election. Davis challenges Simon to doing better at sewing up the gap while being dishonest about what it takes himself.
It doesn't lead itself to a fair fight, and that's exactly why there haven't been more specific proposals on either side.
I would vote for Simon even if I was a middle of the roader, simply because we desperately need someone who has good judgement and is able to face issues head on. Davis shows very clearly through his own handling of the budget - identical to his handling of the power crisis - that he's adept at slipping things under the rug and lousy at dealing with the resultant lumpy carpets.
