I've lived here in Fl. all my life. The big sugar companies trashed the everglades growing govt. subsidized sugar for as long as I can remember. The runoff has affected coastal fishery habitat as far offshore as the Marquesas. The reefs surrounding Ft. Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas are becoming bleached lifeless chunks of dead corral. I believe personally that red tide is a by-product of sugars runoff problems. Development too close to the everglades is one of the reasons that home insurance is so hard to get and is so expensive for everyone in Fl. As far as the everglades go...conservation is a conservative ideal.
