Jeff Head seeks FReeper Input on Promoting the Dragon's Fury Series (Vanity)
Online Ad for the Dragon's Fury Series ^ | Aug 31, 2002 | Jeff Head

Posted on 08/31/2002 4:50:44 PM PDT by Jeff Head

OK, I realize this is a vanity, and I apologize to any who may be offended by it ... [Note: If you are, stop now and exit the thread].

But, since the FReeper community has been so supportive of my efforts with this series, and since I am upfront and open about my intentions with the series ... that is to use the series to send what I deem to be critical messages about our Republic and the current circumstances we find ourselves in ... I thought I would seek input from those folks at FR interested in and following the enitre project (and that's how I view it).

Here's the thought.

I have been somewhat successful so far in self-publishing the series and getting a fairly good audience for the books. Lots of great comments, some very good rankings on Amazon, lots of great input and critique from all over the country, particularly from members here at FR.

The Series is not "Politically Correct", but I believe it is "Constitutionally Correct" and in keeping with the intent of the founders of this nation and focused on current efforts to return our Republic to its Constitutional and moral roots. But no major publisher has taken interest in the work to date.

So, being committed to the effort in any case ... I intend to start a serious and organized advertisement campagin for the books in an effort to increase exposure and to promote the series.

In that regard, I have produced an initial online advertisement that I want FReeper input on. I intend to make this effort at my own expenze, starting online. Here is a link to that online ad:

ONLINE AD FOR THE DRAGONS FURY SERIES

I would like FReepers who are interested to consider the following:

I intend to take the ad, after it has been through this process (critique and forwarded onto email chains) and pay for space on various online sites.

After that, I intend to take out similar ads in local newspapers in major locals and expand to radio as I can afford them.

What are your thoughts on all of this?

I appreciate folks time and apologize for any inconvienence. Particularly, I appreciate this site, its members, its lurkers and its owner for providing a platform for projects such as this to germinate.

Thnks for those wonderful ideas and suggestions.

You'll have some FRemail tonight or tomorrow. I intend to take this particular ad and address it to a specific audience ... and spin off more ads for others.

Basiclly, the audience runs from people of a conservative bent, who will already recognize the issues and find substantiation for their fears and therefore a grounding for their activism as they enjoy a good read ... to people who are unaware of the dangers/messages but enjoy a good techno-thriller read, where messages are included in the hopes it will get them to think while they are reading.

Basically, anyone who enjoys a good techno-thriller ... with the intent of sending messages about the dangers we face, the roots of our Constitutional Republic and the hard cold realities of where current trends can lead.

I have had a number of "liberals" already write and tell me they like the book. I believe more people than we think are aware of the dangers we face ... for all of those, it is their ideas of what to do about them that differ. As you know, the book presents some very straight shooting ideas that germinate in the midst of the most severe crisis.

Best regards.

Well, with the 90 day lag on revenue ... and with the last month being really the first time the book has really climbed and maintained a high position/ranking (Microsoft Reader version) ... I just haven't had the funds to go after or engage those types of options.

I believe at some point they will come along ... but I am a babe in the woods in this industry and am proceeding forward now on my own drive and the help of a lot of folks here and at home.

I agree with your statements and am trying to work on those and will simply proceed forward. My determination is to get the books written and to as broad an audience as possible. If that turns out to be the audience I can reach and generate through my own promotion (ie. here on FR, etc) and whatever word of mouth is generated by that ... so be it.

If help comes along to broaden that and increase it even more ... I am game as long as the messages are maintianed ... that's the key and motivation for me.

Thanks so for you encouragement and support and suggestions. This thread has been a treasure chest of the same. Any individual wanting to promote a worthy work should look to this thread as an example of what FR is capable of IMHO.

Jeff,

Apologies for the late response. Been offline for a few days. And being that I have, it appears that many fellow FReepers have been providing you with lots of sound, thoughtful advice -- leaving little room for improvement at this point. :) The ad is beautiful.

Just a couple of random thoughts on what I have read here:

I don't agree with the few somewhat negative comments regarding the books' covers. I think they are anything but 'amateurish'. On the contrary, they are beautifully done, and eye-catching. The people to whom I have either given, or shown, the books have all commented on the uniqueness and appeal of the covers. So, until you sign a contract with a major publisher who insists that the covers be changed, I would leave well enough (actually, much more than well enough) alone (my two cents worth :).

I know, from our conversations, that your 'target audience' is much wider than fellow conservatives/patriots. But beginning your major push with that audience might be wise. I believe that whoever on this thread suggested taking out ads in conservative publications was steering you in the right direction. You would receive a significant order response if you placed such an ad in conservative-leaning, either print or internet, magazines. Some suggestions:

The American Conservative
The American Enterprise
American Freedom News
American Renaissance
American Spectator
Capitol Hill Blue
Commentary
Common Conservative
The Conservative Monitor
The Daily Republican
The Federalist
FrontPage Magazine
Gridlock and Load
Human Events
Independent Republican
Insight Magazine
Media Bypass
National Review
Newswatch Magazine
PoliticsandMedia.com
The Weekly Standard
World on the Web

Then, once sales to that segment of your potential readership take off (the 'preaching to the choir' segment, who probably agreed with many of your premises to begin with, so will not necessarily have 'learned' a lot politically, but who will surely appreciate the story line because of the leanings they already had), you could use a portion of the proceeds to branch out by placing ads in more 'mainstream' publications -- where you would be reaching an audience that might not be quite as initially receptive to your message, but, with more books in circulation by then, would be more willing to look at it. And there is where you will possibly make your most significant impact.

Ad copy has to be instantly comprehensible by near-idiots....backhoe

(Love it!)

You have FReepmail.

I agree, I just think Jeff should aim his ad assets at the narrow target audience, and let them generate the word of mouth with the wider audience.

As always, Joanie, thanks for your thoughtful replies and analysis ... and all of your support, encouragement and help.

Got the FRemail and replied.

This ad is in great shape thanks to all the folks participating on this thread. I have emailed it to my entire list asking them in turn to forward it on. I hope others, who are so inclined, will do likewise.
