Intruder Scare Shuts Down Utah Munitions Compound Thu Sep 5, 2:20 PM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - A military compound housing the world's largest stockpile of chemical and gas munitions curtailed operations on Thursday after an intruder was seen in the compound, officials said.

The Deseret Chemical Depot, about 30 miles west of Salt Lake City, stores World War II-era chemical and gas munitions.

Seems somewhat self serving and hypocritical of the U.S. to have all this crap then bomb Iraq if they do, and don't give me any B.S. about but we don't use ours and sadman does. In the U.S. Army I was gassed and I didn't like it at all.
Seems to me we have enough arms without lowering ourselves to this crap.
Gas is not right and as for nerve agents i hear one needs some of everything to make anti agents. But this stuff is just wrong too.
P.S. Go U.S.A. kick sadman all the way to hell. And may GOD bless all of our soldiers and bring them home safe to their loved ones and families. Which is all Americans.

We signed the chemical weapons convention long ago. The issue was disposal, that's why the stuff is still there. Most of it likely is useless as the U.S. has not manufactured offensive chem/bio weapons in over 30 years (they have used some of the leftover chem/bio stuff in research on defenses against such weapons).

As for Iraq, as part of the cease-fire agreement in 1991 they pledged to get rid of all their chem/bio/nuclear weapons programs. They are in violation of that agreement; that is the reason why the U.S. has legal grounds to proceed.

""Seems somewhat self serving and hypocritical of the U.S. to have all this crap""

Perhaps, if the USA were not in the process of destroying it. Some treaty or other only allowed us to use one destruction facility, or some such nonsense. As I recall, the incinerator for nerve gas is at the munitions facility in Boardman, Oregon. The process to incinerate a batch of nerve gas takes quite a while.

As another poster mentioned, we have not manufactured any in decades.

I work in Ogden, UT. I've heard some of the news of this on the radio. I hope they catch the guy(s). Night's coming and that infrared on the nose of a helicopter works real well!!

Yes we have chemical weapons & have had them since 1918 the difference is that we are trying to dispose of ours without 1) poisoning ourselves 2)poisoning the water table/land 3)poisoning our children 3 generations down the line 4)Ours is a NO FIRST USE POLICY has been since 1918. Tear gas is used for training on the proper way to wear a gas mask since LETHAL chemical weapons exist and neither you or I can un-invent them training in defesive measures is going to continue.I think that with the threat of NBC terror attacks the govt. should call for submission of designs for a civil defense gas mask to be tested for function at the Aberdeen proving grounds and the best design & only those who took part in the design competition would be allowed to produce the mask for sale /issue on the homefront
