Pharmacist tells parents of attack

01/01/2003

Associated Press

LEVELLAND, Texas - The parents of a Texas man wounded in an attack in Yemen said he thought he would die during a shooting spree that killed three missionaries.

Don Caswell, 49, was the only survivor in Monday's attack at the Southern Baptist hospital where he worked as a pharmacist. He was released Tuesday from a Yemeni hospital after treatment for abdomen wounds, a U.S. diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

D.C. and Mary Caswell said their son on Tuesday told them by phone details of the attack and of his miraculous escape.

His parents said Caswell he was shot three times in the abdomen by a gunman identified by Yemeni officials as 30-year-old Abed Abdul Razak Kamel.

Caswell told his parents he heard gunshots and came to the door of the pharmacy to investigate. Then he came face to face with the attacker, who looked at Caswell and started shooting, his parents said.

He was hit twice in the abdomen and started backing into the pharmacy, but the gunman came in and shot him once more, Mary Caswell told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The gunman then pointed the weapon and appeared to pull the trigger twice more. Mary Caswell said her son heard two clicks and thought "this was it."

However, the gun didn't fire and guards took the suspect into custody. The shooter never said a word to Caswell during the attack, his mother said.

The doctor who performed emergency surgery was amazed that all three bullets missed major organs, Mary Caswell said.

His parents have not received word on when he might return to the United States.

"He's very emotional and upset about the others" killed in Monday's attack, Mary Caswell said.

The International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention identified the dead as purchasing agent Kathleen A. Gariety, 53, of Wauwatosa, Wis.; Dr. Martha C. Myers, 57, of Montgomery, Ala.; and hospital director William E. Koehn, 60, a Kansas native who moved to Yemen in 1975.

I'd rather know the gunman was dead instead of "in custody."

Note from a friend:

About 40 people gathered for an afternoon prayer service at First Baptist Church of Eustace, southeast of Dallas, where hospital pharmacist Donald W. Caswell and his family attended services before moving to Yemen. He was recovering from surgery for a stomach wound.

Don was our Pharmacist for several years until about 2 years ago he ,wife and 2 children went over to Yemen as Missionaries....He is a great person,so glad to know he survived. So sorry for the others

More Christian Missionary blood on "Allah's" hands ... the true nature of the moon god Allah ance again revealed ...

The Dinner Table - [5.51] O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

How many more Christians will have to die...

How many MILLION more Christians will have to die...

Before our stupid Allah-licking government will admit that there is no such thing as a good Muslim. They will all have to be converted, or killed, if there is to be a peaceful world.

well I still think there are probably a lot of "good" people who are MINO's (Muslims In Name Only) ... just as there are a lot of good secular people, for the most part ... nonetheless, when they follow it strictly, as Taliban Johnny Walker Lindh wanted, because the Taliban taught the "purest" form of Islam, well we see the result ...

the Christian missionaries gave up a period of their lives to try and help the poor in Yemen ... and this guy killed them in the name of Allah ... terrible ...

My son went to Eustis High school. He's now a missionary in Uruguay, but should be home safe and sound in July!

It'll happen but we won't live long enough to see it.
