Pharmacist tells parents of attack
01/01/2003
LEVELLAND, Texas - The parents of a Texas man wounded in an attack in Yemen said he thought he would die during a shooting spree that killed three missionaries.
Don Caswell, 49, was the only survivor in Monday's attack at the Southern Baptist hospital where he worked as a pharmacist. He was released Tuesday from a Yemeni hospital after treatment for abdomen wounds, a U.S. diplomat said on condition of anonymity.
D.C. and Mary Caswell said their son on Tuesday told them by phone details of the attack and of his miraculous escape.
His parents said Caswell he was shot three times in the abdomen by a gunman identified by Yemeni officials as 30-year-old Abed Abdul Razak Kamel.
Caswell told his parents he heard gunshots and came to the door of the pharmacy to investigate. Then he came face to face with the attacker, who looked at Caswell and started shooting, his parents said.
He was hit twice in the abdomen and started backing into the pharmacy, but the gunman came in and shot him once more, Mary Caswell told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
The gunman then pointed the weapon and appeared to pull the trigger twice more. Mary Caswell said her son heard two clicks and thought "this was it."
However, the gun didn't fire and guards took the suspect into custody. The shooter never said a word to Caswell during the attack, his mother said.
The doctor who performed emergency surgery was amazed that all three bullets missed major organs, Mary Caswell said.
His parents have not received word on when he might return to the United States.
"He's very emotional and upset about the others" killed in Monday's attack, Mary Caswell said.
The International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention identified the dead as purchasing agent Kathleen A. Gariety, 53, of Wauwatosa, Wis.; Dr. Martha C. Myers, 57, of Montgomery, Ala.; and hospital director William E. Koehn, 60, a Kansas native who moved to Yemen in 1975.
How many MILLION more Christians will have to die...
Before our stupid Allah-licking government will admit that there is no such thing as a good Muslim. They will all have to be converted, or killed, if there is to be a peaceful world.
..adding your son to my prayer list, John. :o)
It'll happen but we won't live long enough to see it.
