Unbelievable! PETA equates chicken farms with the Holocaust!
PETA ^ | 2/24/03 | Me

Alright, I realize the wackos at PETA have been off the deep end for some time. The whole "pity the donkey suicide bomber" thing cost them what little public respect they had left. But now they have totally crossed the line from amusing, if deluded, wierdos to truly sick. They have a picture on their website containing images of gaunt Holocaust victims in their concentration camp bunks juxtaposed with chickens in cages. The text reads "THE HOLOCAUST ON YOUR PLATE." These clowns have taken moral equivalence to a new height. This is dangerous and evil. I calmly suggest that anyone even remotely affiliated with this organization be ostracized from society and beat with KFC Honey BBQ Drumstick. This better make FOX News.

OK...Indulge me...

Is there any chance that story about Mike the Headless Chicken is true?

If it's a hoax, it's really well done.

It is remarkable that they, like many people who champion their causes with such fervor, they go so overboard and end up alienating more and more people.

If teh premise is 'don't be cruel to animals,' they probably would have a lot of people sympathetic to them and listening to what they have to say.

As they go more and more extreme, they lose listeners and lose credibility.

Something like this is just so overboard that they may have well taken their last bit of credibility and flushed it down the toilet.

I recall in college once there was a very extreme campaign a local leftist organization did and Iw as speaking to one of the girls who engineered it, and I asked her why she would be so extreme and turn so many people off.

She said they wanted to shock people, as if that was somehow and end to itself.

So I said but shouldnt she be trying to convince people? How else could her movement gain momentum and converts if she alienated people and didn't convince them?

She was confused, and a bit bewildered - she hadn't thought that far ahead, it seems.

Oh Vassar! I miss those days! Reagan was president, even!!! ;-)

Which reminds me, the legion of loopy leftists on the political landscapes really do remind me of college activists who never grew up. More interested in sneaking back to their domains and snickering at their inside jokes, playing pranks, defacing the opposition's advertisements, and stealing the opposition's newspapers. More intreested in mental mastrabation and a protracted political circle jerk than approaching topics with integrity and class.

Then again, their heart skipped a beat when it looked like their recommendation for grad school woudln't fawn over them. Now, that's leadership!

My mom and grandmother would slaughter 30 or so at a time. They hung them upside-down by their feet on the outdoor clothes lines and they did that for a couple of reasons. First to keep them caught (it isn't easy to snare a chicken) and secondly to minimize the running around you describe (headless chickens seem to run right at you in those first moments and they can run for a surprisngly long time too). My mom couldn't do the slaughtering---grandma had to do that. My grandmother could handle 4 head of horses, drive tractors, milk cows and quite generally do what needed to be done without blinking an eye. Seems to me the country could use a few more her type these days.

Chew on all that PETA.

"Mike the headless chicken" was no hoax. Mike lived for 18 months after his head was chopped off in the mid '40s. He even got a spread in the Oct 22nd 1945 Life Magazine.

Check this site out!

Grandma had to move into a full care facility recently. She is in her 90's and is staring the grim reaper in the eye. Your granny sounds like she was made of the same stuff as mine. I agree, we could use more citizens like these two grand old dames. Grandma probably worked even harder than the two men she outlived.

I live near Fruita, Co where Mike the headless chicken once lived, and it is absolutely true. He lived on a farm near there, both pre and post head for several years. They used to feed him ground up corn with an eyedropper. I don't have a link off-hand, but a search of the Fruita,Co website might get you somewhere as they've started an annual festival for him.

Poultry ranches use wood chippers to kill thousands of chickens

By Elizabeth Fitzsimons STAFF WRITER

February 22, 2003

Workers at poultry ranches in Valley Center and Potrero have been throwing thousands of live chickens into wood chippers to thin their flocks, animal control officers discovered this week.

Neither of the farms, owned by Ward Egg Ranch, had been infected with exotic Newcastle, a deadly avian virus that has struck 16 Southern California poultry ranches. Workers told authorities they were destroying old, unproductive hens and were following the advice of veterinarians affiliated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"The magnitude of the suffering is enormous, and it's matched only by the magnitude of the stupidity and the callousness," said Wayne Pacelle, a senior vice president of the Humane Society of the United States.

Messages left at Ward Egg Ranch were not returned. A woman who answered the phone last night said the ranch was not commenting.

The San Diego County Department of Animal Services is continuing to investigate, said Lauren Joniaux, regional director for the South County shelter in Bonita.

"This was absolutely not an approved method of euthanasia on these animals," said animal control Lt. Mary Kay Gagliardo.

She and others with the animal services department said they had never heard of destroying animals in a wood chipper. However, a spokesman for the USDA said the practice has been considered by some in the poultry industry to depopulate their flocks.

Thirty-thousand chickens were destroyed at the Valley Center ranch on Fruitvale Road, Gagliardo said. She said most of the birds were alive when thrown in the chipper. At the Potrero ranch, on state Route 94 in the southeastern part of the county, it was unclear how many birds had been destroyed, Joniaux said.

Ranches typically destroy birds by gassing them or breaking their necks.

One worker at the Potrero ranch told an investigator that their arms had gotten tired from breaking the chickens' necks, so they threw them into the machinery, Gagliardo said.

Gagliardo said she was referred by a ranch foreman to a veterinarian, Gregg Cutler.

Cutler told her he directed the ranch to use the chipper, and it was "humane because it was immediate and painless. And he absolutely stands by it still," Gagliardo said.

Gagliardo said Cutler told her he was also an epidemiologist and a consultant to the USDA.

When reached yesterday, Cutler said he had no idea what the ranches were doing, and he had no affiliation with the USDA.

"I just choose not to discuss anything," Cutler said.

A Valley Center resident tipped off Animal Services to the case, Gagliardo said. Investigators visited the Valley Center ranch Thursday and, after learning of its connection to the Potrero site, visited there, too.

Gagliardo said the ranches were planning to use the chicken remains for fertilizer. The Valley Center ranch is near ranches infected with exotic Newcastle disease.

At ranches were the disease has been detected, state and federal officials always euthanize the birds with carbon dioxide, said Larry Hawkins, a USDA spokesman. He said the shredding of the birds did not pose a threat of spreading the disease because they had not contracted it.

I had to go to the PETA web site to see for myself . . . . .

While stationed in the old FRG I walked the grounds of Dachau on 3 seperate occasions: (with my wife, when my partents came over to visit, and again when my wife's mother came to see our first child), and I can not put into words the level of absolute disgust that I have for PETA or anyone who supports them in any way.

Please excuse me as I must log off and go lose my dinner.

Well that does it! I have redirected the www.envirowako.com URL to PETA's page. They have earned it.

I'm thinking of doing the same with the www.looneyleft.com but I hate pulling it off of Hillary :)
