Solar System 'twin' found

By Dr David Whitehouse

BBC News Online science editor

Astronomers have found a planetary system similar to ours - a Jupiter-like world circling a Sun-like star in roughly the same orbit that Jupiter follows our Sun.

Of the 100 or so other planetary systems known, this one more closely resembles ours than any other.

Researchers speculate that this system may contain other worlds, such as smaller rocky planets like Earth, either in orbit around the star or around the Jupiter-like world itself.

The planet's parent star, called HD 70642, is slightly too faint to be seen with the unaided eye, but is easily visible in the southern sky using binoculars.

They have interesting photos and a model system linked.

Fantastic! Finally a nice place is found where we can banish all the criminals, perverts and looney liberals who encourage them and make rules to protect them with YOUR tax money. Of course, there will be no guns there...and every bad person will be forgiven with no punishment, only a group singing of kumbaya and public statements of how sorry the libs feel for the evildoer. The libs live in an alternate universe anyway... Of course without guns and such despicable "right wing" values like honesty and traditional morals, what will the libs blame things on?

I think the next step is finding a Earth like planet. Who knows maybe this solar system has a Earth like planet

If there is intelligent life there, the number one question is friend or foe.

This is at least the 3rd thread on this topic. Another thread. This is all over the news media, and apparently of interest on FR, but on FR the level of understanding is most excellent.

It just so happens that I had received a seti@home work unit from that quadrant of the galaxy when this story came in.

So I peeked inside the program, and I found out that on their planet, Clinton lost in 1992. On their world, Ross Perot became President and served for three years before it became way too obvious to ignore that he was insane. So "the Admiral" became President for a year. Now Bob Dole is in there in his second term. Right now he's pushing some plan to have the government buy Viagra for everybody.

It turns out they didn't even have an Iraq War. That's because there was no terrorist attack on 9/11. In fact their World Trade towers are still standing. Osama did die, though. Ross Perot had him blown up the first week he was in there.

Umm, our solar system has an earth size planet between it's Jupiter sized planet and the sun. It has some pretty decent surf and tides, but that's due in large part to it's large lunar sized companion.
