Energy Execs Welcome Pope’s Call for Carbon Penalties

A number of the world’s biggest oil producers have pledged to support “economically meaningful” carbon pricing policies in response to a call by Pope Francis for some form of carbon tax to fight climate change.

ExxonMobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Total, Chevron, and Eni, along with major asset managers such as BlackRock and BNP Paribas, declared in a joint statement Friday that governments should set pricing schedules at a level that encourages business and investment, while “minimizing the costs to vulnerable communities and supporting economic growth.”

On Friday, Pope Francis warned of disastrous consequences if humanity does not react swiftly to the threat of climate change, since the world has reached a “critical moment” and there is no time to waste.

"Dear friends, time is running out!” the pope told a group of petroleum leaders in a Vatican-sponsored conference on energy transition Friday. “We cannot afford the luxury of waiting for others to come forward or of prioritizing short-term economic benefits. The climate crisis requires decisive action from us, here and now.”

In that address, Francis said that a transition to renewable energy “involves managing the social and employment impact of the move to a low-carbon society.”

In the meantime, “carbon pricing is essential if humanity is to use the

The big energy CEO’s are hedging their bets, in other words, they are straddling the fence.

"ExxonMobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Total, Chevron, and Eni … declared … that governments should set pricing schedules …"

Don't let anyone tell you big business is "conservative" or "American". They are globalist socialists who thrive on a controlled economy which they manipulate.

The injury they do to America and American workers is merely "collateral" damage.

I wish I could upvote this. The carbon tax is the test run for a globally managed tax structure, which will serve as the beta framework for global governance. The big corporations are as on board with that to be sure.

Call me jaded, but I think...no, I KNOW, that they’re doing this because it will benefit THEM in $ome way or another.

No one is in it for We The People...across the Globe.

P.S. And that Pope has GOT to go! OMG! It’s really sad to see Catholicism co-opted in such a manner. :(

Will China be exempt as usual?

Not only Is China, by far, the biggest polluter of plastic in the oceans, but they're also, by multiple orders of magnitude, the biggest source of additional CO2 emissions on earth.

Countries' 2017 CO2 output in Mt/yr, and their % increase since 1990
China - 10.8, up 353.8%
U.S.A . - 5.1, up 0.4%
All EU - 3.5, down 19.5%
India. . - 2.5, up 305.1%
Russia. - 1.6, down 25.8%

Note that China already emits more than US, EU, and India combined, despite having only half their total population.

Also note that under the Paris Accord, that Democrats are desperate to defend, China gets to ADD another 30% by 2030... and 30% of 10.8 is 3.24... which is about as much as the entire EU emits combined today. And the rest of the world is required to cut back so that China does not have to.

Sorry, Holy Father, but this is not your expertise. This is just your prudential opinion, not binding teaching on faith or morals.

If I understand the pope’s carbon tax agenda correctly, wasn’t this pope concerned about the poor? Isn’t that why he named himself after St. Francis?

Well obviously. Oil can't get expensive anymore - as the price of gas goes up, the US can just open more production at the drop of a hat and kill the supply market. OPEC can no longer force $5/gal gasoline (unless you live in CA). Oil companies want this pricing schedule because they KNOW their costs cannot go up, but their prices can easily go down. If Gov set a price floor/ceiling, it prevents the market from forcing them to charge less than they could.
