first the Ottoman Empire's invasion and subjugation, then the Nazis and the Communists (which I classify as a continuation of similar totalitarian brutality).

IMHO,the Mongolian Tartar invasions of Eastern Europe and Russia were the most brutal,(in the 13th century).Russia had no wooden Churches standing after these invasions, except for in Novgorod(which was also in the Hanseatic league). The Teutonic Knights had as much to do as any group with Russia being against Catholicism. King Jan Sobieski had a resounding victory against the Turks at Vienna Austria around 1683.After this Poland went down quickly,as Moscow ascended to take all of what is now Russia.Of course the Serbs,Bulgarians, and Macedonians took the brunt of the Ottoman Empires rage as they slowly lost their European possessions.

That is true about the Mongolian invasions being the most brutal. In fact, in terms of the percentages of world population slaughtered, the Mongols outdid both the Communists and Nazis put together, and that's saying a lot!
