A Pakistani newspaper says Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden has dug himself in at an abandoned military base in the Pamir mountain range.

The News claims the information has been passed on to American forces by the Russians who controlled the area during their time in Afghanistan.

It says the former Soviets used the base to store nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The News

says route maps provided by Russian intelligence to the US show bin Laden's hideout in the mountain range has exit routes to three countries - Tajikistan, China and Pakistan's northern areas.

Bin Laden has reportedly taken control of the site which has abundant electricity and huge storage capacity to allow his men to survive for long periods. The paper says it is being guarded by 2,500 Al-Qaida followers.

Sounds too good to be true. If it is, I can only assume that he hasn't watched that many James Bond movies.

I seriously doubt the soviets ever had nukes based in Afghanistan. Tactical or artillery rounds, maybe. ICBMs no way. What would be the point of moving missiles out of your country when they can reach anywhere on the globe?

This newspaper is probably state controled. It will be interesting to see what news it decides to cover in the coming days, if only because Pakistan is the only Moslem country with nukes.

Seems very unlikely. The Pamir mountain range is controlled by the Northern forces.

The Pamir region is that sliver of land at the top of the map that runs between Tajikstan and Pakistan into China. I thought this region was controlled by the Northern Alliance, but I suppose bin Laden could have swung through Tajikstan or Pakistan and then back into Afghanistan, thereby possibly bypassing the Northern Alliance. But this doesn't make sense, because the Taliban base of support is in the South of the country. Plus, if bin Laden were to hole up in the North, he would really be restricting his options as far as his ability to flee Afghanistan were concerned. I suppose he could take a chance on getting into China, but that would be taking a big risk. Likewise, fleeing into Tajikstan would also be problematic because of that regime's close ties to Russia. That leaves Pakistan, which would might help bin Laden out, but it seems to me that even if he did have one of these escape routes planned out, he would have to be very concerned about us getting good intel from the Northern Alliance as to exactly where he was and exactly what he was doing.

Story does not seem likely to pass smell test or logic check. This facility is more useful to northern resistance/mujahadeen than Osama. He is probably in (near) Kabul or Kandahar.

This isn't the first time this has been reported.

One has to question this article when it reports that the former Soviet Union stored ICBMs there. Why would the former Soviet Union store nuclear weapons in enemy territory and especially in an enemy territory that was so unfriendly to them?

It doesn't seem likely.

One of the stupidest things you can do when threatened by American bombers is to all bunch up into one place, creating a juicy target.

A wise leader would disperse his forces, knowing the US can't carpet bomb the whole country.
