Osama reaches Wakhan corridor?
Updated on 9/21/2001 10:50:10 AM
F.P. Report
PESHAWAR: After the Shoora decision, which concluded on Thursday afternoon , Osama Bin Ladin has reportedly reached Wakhan Corridor near Chinese border.
According to an informed source on the Pak-Afghan border the Taliban officials rushed him towards Chinese.
It is worth mentioning here that much awaited Shoora meeting after thorough discussion on the issue had reached to the conclusion that Osama should vacate Afghanistan in the current critical situation.

This was posted before, but with a silly title.
I think it is impossible for any of us to know if this report is true, but it brings up very interesting issues.
It makes sense that he would go there to hide and also to make it a tense situation between the US and Chinese Communist authorities.
The Wakhan corridor (I never heard the name before) is a panhandle that forms the Afghanistan China border.
Moving as close to China as possible ups the stakes, I would think.

I would not be surprised if he goes to China. And then is proven "innocent" in a Chinese trial.

That area is controlled by the Northern Alliance, though I don't know the corridor.

I thought that the opposition party (not the Taliban), controlled the northeastern portion of Afghanistan. Why would they allow passage to Bin Laden?

This is true, from the maps I've seen. Also, though it would make things stickier for the US if China were to shelter bin Laden or provide him a "fair" trial, what would China gain from pissing off the US? And why would Osama (or his friends) have any reason to believe that China would be friendly to their cause? Not right now, certainly.

He's in Lebanon !
No, he's in Afghanistan !
No, he's in Chechnya !
We'll be hearing conflicting stories like this for a long time. We'll have to take them all with a grain of salt.

Actually I think even after we blow his freaking head off we'll be seeing this stuff. He'll be the tabloids' new Elvis. "Sightings" everywhere.
