KENT COUNTY, MI -- Today marks the first day that people can apply for concealed weapon permits in the Sate of Michigan. County clerks and sheriff departments were flooded with people, some waiting in line three hours to start the paperwork The process isn't quick; after paperwork, fingerprinting, and a gun-safety class, the County can still deny an application. There is, however, still opposition to the new law. Those against CCW are collecting signatures for a ballot initiative. If they succeed, the issue will be put on the ballot in November 2002. Newspeople from the local ABC affiliate (WZZM channel 13) and from the Grand Rapids Press were on hand to take comments and photos. There was overwhelming support from passersby (mainly in autos), and only a few negative comments and gestures.
