On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the Republican Jewish Coalition will host a presidential-candidates forum featuring Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum. Not invited is the GOP candidate currently polling around third in New Hampshire and second in Iowa: Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas). The explanation: Paul was not invited to attend the RJC's candidates forum because the organization - as it has stated numerous times in the past - "rejects his misguided and extreme views," said [RJC Executive Director Matt] Brooks. "He's just so far outside of the mainstream of the Republican party...

A 20-something female walks into a gun shop, wearing a pink sweater and pearls, and asks to buy an AK-47. Half-dozen men, several in flannel, look up from the rows of gun displays. They had holsters. She had heels. I knew I looked out of place at a gun store, but I wanted to see how difficult it would be to buy an assault weapon in Pittsburgh, just days after Keith “Spud” Watts Jr. was murdered with an AK-47 knock-off outside Carrick High School. I went alone to Firearms Unlimited in Bridgeville two days after the shooting. I parked in...

KEARNY, N.J. Hudson County authorities say a newborn girl was found partially buried outside a church in Kearny. A priest planting flowers made the discovery outside Saint Cecelia's Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday. The body was wrapped in a cloth blanket and dressed in a one-piece jumpsuit with booties. The cause and manner of death is under investigation. However, authorities say there was no trauma on the body. The baby was only a few days old, but authorities are not sure when she died. Anyone with information should contact the Hudson County prosecutor.

Never trust the "axis of evil." When U.S. President George W. Bush threatened to invade Iraq if it didn't re-admit UN arms inspectors, that tricky Saddam Hussein immediately agreed, leaving the Bush administration gnashing its teeth in frustration. If the UN didn't give him a green light to again bomb Iraq back to the Stone Age, Bush thundered - with stunning illogic - he would ignore the UN Security Council and take action unilaterally. This was the very same Bush who had a few days earlier vowed to invade Iraq because it was ignoring the Security Council. As that tragic...

Not many people would imagine that a small, somewhat affluent community near beautiful San Francisco Bay would have a problem with random gunfire. But in Redwood City, Calif., random gunshots became so much of a problem, fed up residents stormed the city council and pressed officials to take action. "During the meeting, someone played a tape of the gunfire that was going on in the neighborhood on New Years Eve," said Bonnie Miller, a Redwood City resident. "It sounded like you were in the middle of a war. Although it was more than you would normally hear, it opened some...

Subject: Letter to the FAA Federal Aviation Agency 800 Independence Avenue S.W. Washington D.C. 20591 Dear Sirs: I have the solution for the prevention of hijackings, and at the same time getting our airline industry back on its feet. Since men of the Muslim religion are not allowed to look at naked women we should replace all of our female flight attendants with strippers. Muslims would be afraid to get on the planes for fear of seeing a naked woman, and of course, every businessman in this country would start flying again in hope of seeing a naked woman. We...

Are we still on Earth? Did anybody just watch Hannity and Colmes? I never thought it would happen, but I agreed with Colmes on the issue of the Homeland Security's new "citizen snoop" program. Colmes actually was AGAINST citizens invading other people's privacy in the name of "national security." He made several statements that sounded logical and well-thought out. Libertarians (small "L") would have been proud.Hannity sounded like a flaming liberal as he debated the fellow from the Cato Institute. In his closing statements, he said (paraphrased) "the government simply needed a streamlined, efficient way to compile information on terrorist...

At a moment in our history when attention is almost entirely focused on a temporary external enemy, stubborn attempts to continue rudely pointing a finger toward the permanent internal enemy are, in the natural way of these things, immediate targets for reactionary growls and snarls and gnashings of teeth. All over the country, knees are supposed to be jerking in perfect rhythmic synchronization to our martial marching orders, as minds are simultaneously dutifully emptied of rational thought for the duration of the hostilities. And because we are now promised War Without End, the subtext of the shrill angry noise emanating...

Many are willing to pay for security with liberty Few oppose erosion of their rights Most Americans are willing to give up some freedom this Fourth of July if it helps protect them from terrorists. Several recent polls, including one in Greater Cincinnati, show that three out of four people favor limiting civil liberties in exchange for more security. Even as they prepare to celebrate liberty and independence today, most Americans seem unconcerned about new laws that give authorities broader power to tap their phones, read their e-mails and monitor their activities. They are far more worried about personal safety,...

Feb. 22 — Did you hear the happy news? Jodie Foster and Calista Flockhart have new babies! Camryn Manheim has a new baby, too. And Elizabeth Hurley is expecting! Whether adopting or giving birth, add them and Rosie O'Donnell to the long list of single moms who are celebrated in Hollywood. But as all these new moms are celebrated, do you notice that there's no talk about any need for a father to guide these kids? Sounds like Manheim's TV show. "I'm going to be a single mom," Manheim's character on The Practice said, calling the baby's father "basically just ...

OK - here's the deal. My daughter, Sarah, is in the 3rd grade. Public school (I know - ack! Last year there hopefully). She is doing a report on Thomas Jefferson in the form of a poster. The other two people that the kids could choose to do a report on were Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman. Of course, being my daughter (and knowing I would disown her if she chose otherwise), she chose TJ.Anyway, we decided to spice up the poster with a few quotes from Jefferson, but the only ones I am familiar with are the "blood ...

Twas the year after Clinton, and up in the House The Republicans were forgetin’ what made him a louse; The Capitol -- rid o’ this foe of liberty, Asked for laws that once filled Nazis with glee. ’Though the twin towers had hardly fallen, For laws against freedom, our president was callin’ Our nation, ‘twas said, could ne’er be the same; God bless us -- even atheists cheered -- and called Him by Name! They said ‘twas like the sad day of 7 December, But of due process and Constitution -- few dare remember; ‘Tis unpatriotic to question, our ...

It has been said that if you don't study history, you are doomed to repeat it. That's why Americans should take note of a horrible tragedy that occurred just over one year ago in Merced, California. It is a tragedy that could have been prevented. On the morning of August 23, 2000, Jonathon David Bruce was high on drugs. He slipped inside a home when the parents were away and began attacking the children inside. Armed only with a pitchfork, and without a stitch of clothing on his body, Bruce proceeded to chase the children through the house -- ...

Dog Days In the late afternoon of March 27th, 12-year-old Zachary Patterson was walking to his home on a private drive in Harpswell, Maine, when he noticed a neighbor’s dog standing in the drive. The large pit bull terrier had menaced him and his mother before, and had once bitten the latter (her injuries were not serious). Zachary began yelling and running toward the house, with the dog in hot pursuit. Ramona Patterson, 32, heard the commotion, and when she rushed to assist her son the dog turned on her. This time, however, she was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. ...

Fire personnel have put out a fire at a military surplus store near the Newport Shopping Center that this afternoon resulted in four minor injuries. The explosion and fire erupted about 1:45 p.m. at the Land, Sea & Air store at 1733 Monmouth St. Four people were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released. Their injuries were cuts and bruises. Rescuers also evacuated the Bob Evans restaurant nearby because of the smoke and have closed off part of Monmouth Street to contain and clean up after the blaze. However the shopping center remains open. Land ...
