At about 4:28 p.m., on May 3rd, 2024, in Okaloosa County, Florida, an Okaloosa Deputy Sheriff responded to a domestic violence call from an apartment complex. A few minutes later, the Deputy shot and killed Senior Airman Roger Fortson after Fortson opened his apartment door in response to the Deputy’s demands.
The incident has gone viral. Fortson’s family has hired controversial lawyer Ben Crump. Crump has made statements the shooting was at the wrong apartment, and Fortson was shot as he walked away from the door, and deputies burst into the apartment. From news4sanantonio.com:
Crump wrote that Fortson grabbed his “legally-owned” gun and was shot as he was walking back to the living room, as deputies burst through the door.
A woman at the complex directed the Deputy Sheriff to apartment 1401 based on information she had received from another woman. The Deputy called for backup and told the woman to direct the backup to him when they arrived. The Deputy proceeded to the apartment. He listened for several seconds at the apartment, then knocked on the door. Then he moved out of the vulnerable area in front of the door and out of the view of the peephole. Then he knocked again while out of view of the peephole. From inside the apartment, a garbled phrase can be heard, of a few words. The only distinguishable word was “police”.
The deputy moves in front of the door, knocks loudly, and announces himself. He demands the door be opened. He knocks again, loudly announcing himself and demanding the door be opened. The door is opened partially. The deputy commands: step back.

And they will find that they committed no wrong. Police investigating police does not work even if another department investigates. Unfortunately in law enforcement there has become an us against them mentality.
If they found he did something wrong, a district attorney will charge him with something like involuntary manslaughter and take a plea for a couple of years at most. If something like this were to occur with an average citizen, we would be looking at 50 years or more in Florida.

Problem is as it stands now, they don’t even have to SEE a gun. All it takes is not IMMEDIATELY obeying commands, moving your hand too fast towards your torso, reaching down to pull up your pants, reaching in your back pocket to pull out your ID, having ANYTHING in your hand that might be mistaken for a gun, another officer yelling that one word “GUN” even though the shooting officer does not see one and that officer might be mistaken.
We are now in a situation where “shoot first and ask questions later” and “Better to be safe than sorry” are the rules of engagement. Our soldiers give more benefit of the doubt to an enemy they are taking prisoner or civilians in a battle zone than our own Law Enforcement does our own citizens.
If there was domestic violence and some authoritative voice says “police”, it probably is a police officer.
If you have a gun in your hand, expect police to shoot.
In this situation, the police have reason to believe violence has already happened.
Also, if you were involved in domestic violence, you don’t want to have a gun at hand because you might want to shoot your domestic partner.

Very very well stated and absolute fact.

To repeat, cops need to be told that this modern kill everything in front of me and then sort out what the situation was is over.
Cops need to return to the time when they knew that a lot of the burden of risk was on them, cops didn’t used to just gun everyone and their dog, you called cops to calm things, not to kill your drunken uncle, or retarded son, or your Golden Retriever, or yourself.
Those awkward seconds at that front door should have been the cop’s burden of risk, instead he murdered an innocent man answering his front door.
If I owned a gun, I would probably keep it in my bedroom in the dresser near the head of the bed and not anywhere near my front door.

Cops are unionized.
It is a collective bargaining issue.
An LEO seeing someone with a gun in his or her hand probably assumes it’s a threat.
Yep, that is a massive problem that has looted our city coffers and gave us $210,000.00 a year city lifeguards and firemen buying rental properties on the coast, and everyone hurting their backs and retiring, and teachers unions controlling textbook purchases and nationalizing our schools, and city/county workers voting as blocks to select who the city government is that they bargain pay and pensions with.
When government unionizes, who are they unionizing against, us.

JFK shows up again when talking about deadly unions.

The instructor at my latest concealed carry class said do not tell a cop you are armed unless the law specifically says you have to. The reason is how he will react, that might get you killed.
Now this is for when being pulled over in a car. The person in this home has every right to be armed. I hope the cop and his department are sued.

No the deputy probably isn’t. Odds are it will be ruled a “good shoot”. It the victim were white it would automatically be a good shoot, but with a black guy there is about 1 in 50 the deputy will catch some grief
