Dems push Biden to act on food prices with inflation ranking as top issue ahead of election

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers signed a letter to President Biden, pleading with him to act on high grocery prices that have been slow to fall as inflation has come down.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., led the letter Monday morning, calling on Biden to "exercise your executive authority to take additional action to address rising food prices without congressional action."

The letter amassed 40 Democratic signatories between the House and Senate, including senators Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and representatives Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., among others.

The lawmakers acknowledged "Americans are facing sky-high food prices."

Notably, grocery prices have not fallen at the same rate as inflation. This is "caused by excessive price gouging by food and grocery giants," the Democrats claimed.

Democrats asked Biden to direct his administration's Department of Justice to "prosecute actors in the agricultural and food sectors for pricefixing and other anticompetitive behavior" and task the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) with creating a joint task force with the purpose of investigating the manipulation of food prices.

"Our letter is about pointing out areas that exist in the law but have long been underused," Warren told Time magazine in an interview. "Now is the perfect moment to move."

So they’re gonna stop the killing of millions of chickens? The harassment of cattle and dairy farmers? Maybe break up the concentration of foreign-owned meat processors? Support domestic oil and gas production to rein in transportation and store/electricity costs?

They’re not going to stop. WEF/NATO nations are carrying out a global holodomor.

What does Biden have to do to get food prices down appreciably enough to make a difference in this election?

It's simple - use the AOC electricity supply model. Need more electricity? Put more outlets on the wall. Problem solved.

This is laughable. Presidents can do a lot to drive up grocery prices, and Biden has done all of that. Presidents can do virtually nothing to bring down grocery prices except avoiding gross federal overspending - and avoiding gross overspending is not even a concept for Democrats.

That does, unfortunately, seem to be the case.

If he does anything, it will be the worst possible thing to do. He’ll make it worse and everybody more miserable.

Biden doing nothing is likely to be better than the leftist impulse to “do something.” These people do not need to be doing things.

The “right” spent a couple of decades making everything into an economic question, but we are still debating these people on what causes inflation. That has been settled science for about 50 years.

These kind of Democrat polices are akin to the forced collectivization policies of the Soviet Union what created starvation in cities and liquidation of the Kulak class to shift the blame away from the politicians who created the problem.

With the Democrats, everything that is old is new again.

Seems like everything goes down for a few days before elections, then right back up.

“Nationalize the farm sector! All power to the soviets!” (/sarc)

Of course food prices will continue to rise because of lower production at the farms. Remember the Russian joke “The government promises to pay us and we promise to work.”

Obviously caused by corporate greed, price fixing and collusion. What other cause could there possibly be?

They never explain why these evil corporations weren’t greedy, colluding and fixing prices during the Trump administration.

It is Democrat policies that have caused the mess we are in. Democrats are not able to fix it because they don’t want to fix anything.

Well this sounds an awful lot like what they did in Venezuela, and it worked just fine there 😉

“caused by excessive price gouging by food and grocery giants,”

Nonsense. Democrats always need a scape goat to blame for the failure of their policies. What is the largest inflationary input into food production? Energy prices.

Food prices are no higher than what they have been. What has changed is the value of the dollar.

!N 2000, you could buy an ounce of gold for 300 “dollars”. Today that very same ounce of gold is over 2300 “dollars”.

What has changed? Gold (or any other product) doesn’t appreciate in value, the change is in the value of the dollar. Why did the US greenback become the world currency after WW2? The “dollar” was interchangeable with real money, silver and gold. Today’s fiat buck is backed by nothing.

Next time you negotiate an employment contract, demand to be paid in something whose value can’t be manipulated, as in gold, silver, or anything with real value.

Do you remember the fellow that woke up 100 years in the future? He immediately checked his bank balance and found out he was a millionaire several time over, than the operator came on and told him to deposit 200,000 “dollars” for the next 3 minutes (this was a very old movie). We are well on or way to this end.

Unless they are in areas that can use unskilled farm help, the illegals will not solve the labor problem on farms. Also, I’m not under the impression any of them want to work. But, I wouldn’t put it past this admin to set up businesses by encouraging the hire of illegals, then DOL comes in for an audit and fines them into oblivion...

As an interesting anecdote, I travel frequently up the Virginia Clinch Valley toward Bluefield VA/WV.

That valley is cattle country and there are lots of big cattle farms and lots and lots of angus cattle.

I wonder, with so many black angus cattle in the fields, why do local beef prices remain through the roof?
