Out of power, Communism is gangsters, dreamers, and psychopaths shouting slogans and making utopian promises. When communists get into power in a country, they ruthlessly kill off factional rivals and potential sources of recruits for a counter-revolution. Then they rob and exploit the wealth of the country.
I think this time is different—not better, mind you, probaby much worse, but different.
If America goes fullbore Maoist or Stalinist, one of two things will happen.
The first is that the lid that has kept nuclear war from occurring will be blown off, and the government won’t have to kill off massive portions of the population, because our enemies will do it for us, and we’ll do it for them.
The second is that it will be the catalyst for a unified world government proclaiming peace through massive government control everywhere. That of course will be the opening to the Tribulation—and since the end of the world as we know it is the reign of Christ, I feel fine.
It also may be that the first will take place and then the second.
Stalin likely did not realize that collective farms would fail and cause millions to starve. It is still his fault but it was not as overt as Auschwitz. Similarly the “Great Leap Forward” caused mass starvation but it is a stretch to think that Mao intended this. Remember that Biden blamed Trump for Covid deaths.
Deaths in the Gulags and at the hands of Pol Pot were more likely to have been intended. And you can argue that Stalin hated the “Kulaks” because they supported themselves and so didn’t fit into the Proletariat/Bourgeoisie struggle narrative.
Estimates vary, but a genuine eye opener is various totalitarian governments mentioned in the 20th century murdered or responsible for somewhere around 100 to 200 Million people.
Get this though. That isn’t counting any of the wars! All that pie in the sky shit just leads to a pile of skulls. Everytime. It’s always the same in every country, the same playbook, the same routine. Demonize a specific segment of the population. Can be based on religious, ethnic, or tribal affiliations.
Gin up hatred in media, academia, and government.

There is no contest when it comes to numbers.
China was in violent turmoil for such a long time, with competing warlords in a dynamic civil war, that it would hard to say how many communists were killed prior to Mao’s takeover. The Shanghai Massacre dispatched thousands of communists, but nothing like the multitudes of people exterminated by the triumphant Maoist regime.
Russia hanged a fair number of terrorists and revolutionaries of various persuasions before 1917, though the majority were anarchists and Socialist Revolutionaries, not actual communists. The Tsarist regime was insufficiently ruthless, determined, and competent to do what was required to wipe out its opposition.
