One thing I never get is how bad it was for those millions of people who died. Jesus did not come to save them.

Yes he did, over two thousand years ago he died to save them not in this life (which is short and temporary) but in the hereafter which is eternal.

Christ didn’t come to save people from their troubles 2000 year ago He came to save all of us from Sin. When He comes again it won’t be to save people from their troubles, their pain or sufferings but from the Anti-Christ.
