The United States will impose tariffs on $7.5 billion (6.8 billion) worth of European imports in retaliation for illegal EU subsidies to airplane maker Airbus.
The announcement came hours after the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Wednesday ruled on a 15-year-old case that the US could impose $7.5 billion in retaliatory tariffs in response to illegal EU subsidies to Airbus that hurt its American rival Boeing.
Washington plans to impose a 10% tariff on aircraft imported from Europe and apply a 25% import tax on other agricultural and industrial items on October 18, the Office of the US Trade Representative said in a statement. [ ]
The WTO had approved up to 100% tariffs, but the US decided to limit the tax.
The $7.5 billion represents a small chunk of EUs $688 billion in exports to the United States, but US airlines have warned the tax on aircraft would increase costs and advised that it should not be applied to existing orders.
Although the US tariffs are allowed under international trade law, the move may set off a tit-for-tat escalation with the 28-member bloc at a time of trans-Atlantic trade tensions, uncertainty over Brexit and a trade war between Washington and Beijing that has rattled global markets.

end NATO now - pull out of Germany now
Sure, and let them remilitarize?
At least troop increases in Poland are a good idea.
BTW, what’s with the seeming thread hijack?
15 years
Are the Airbus products grounded like the Boeing 737 Max?
And, how is your question relevant to this subject in any way whatsoever?
Germany is right that those involved in abortion should be sent to prison. It is something our nation must emulate.
Sorry wrong thread.
Germany isn’t going to remilitarize in our lifetimes. Who would they get to serve in their Army? Muslims?
I was reading my twitter and it shows people I follow like scotch. They are very pissed about taxes on whiskey and many propose following the example from 1773 and have a Whiskey Party, but instead of throwing it to the ocean they plan to just drink it.
The plans for the EU military include (and this is currently in progress) subsuming the militaries of other EU nations into Germany’s. So it’s already happening
I have been hearing about plans for a European Army for years. While closer integration between countries has been ongoing, I can’t see it amounting to much. Germany currently doesn’t even budget enough money to it’s armed forces to keep it’s ships and planes maintained.
Only takes a change to leadership of certain characteristics to make it happen. One thing that Germany never does is lay long-term plans and never execute them.
